Alan Turing. mathematician and computer scientist, was born in Paddington in 1913. Most famous for his wartime work on cryptanalysis at Bletchley Park, Turing also did pioneering theoretical work on computing machines in the 1930s and in 1946 produced the first design for a stored program computer.

The Battle of Heavenfield was fought near Chollerford in about 634AD between a Northumbrian army under Oswald of Bernicia and a Welsh army under Cadwallon ap Cadfan. Cadwallon, who was killed in the battle, was ruler of Gwynedd and by some accounts had his capital at Dolwyddelan.
