The parish church of St Mary, by architect John Loughborough Pearson, was designated a Grade II listed building in December 1966. He also designed another St Mary's church in Freeland, Oxfordshire, although this one isn't listed.

The Heavyweight Boxer William Thomas Wells, better known as Bombardier Billy Wells, was born at 250 Cable Street, Stepney on 31st August 1889. He was British and British Empire Champion from 1911 until 1919, defending his title fourteen times. In 1911 he became the first Heavyweight to win the Lonsdale Belt, which had been introduced for British champions at all weights in 1909. He lived in Ealing, London and died there on 11th June 1967, aged 77.
