When the Manchester overspill estates were built in the 1950s and 60s, Manchester Corporation Transport Department introduced many new longer-distance bus services, since inhabitants of the far-flung estates often retained close work, family and social links with central Manchester. These new bus routes usually went well beyond MCTD's historic operation boundaries.
Bus service 163 was one example which ran from Manchester to terminate at Darn Hill. The 163 still runs today, but has been extended to Bury.
