Edlington (South Yorkshire) has a legend of a dog, in this case the White Greyhound, that was also killed in mistaken circumstances by its owner when it was actually being heroic.

EDIT: Sorry, in this case the owner was killed, even though the dog tried to stop him confronting a burglar. The dog lived a long and happy life, apparently.

EDIT 2: The owner's gardener was shot dead, after the dog twice stopped his master entering an outhouse where the burglar was hidden. The master sent his unfortunate gardener to investigate...that's more like it!

The story has it the infant son of Sir Michael Newton and Margaret, Countess of Coningsby, was stolen from his cradle in the absence of his nurse by a pet monkey. It was pursued to the roof of Culverthorpe Hall where it dropped the child over a parapet; he was killed by the fall.
