Havannah near Congleton, Cheshire; is also named after the location of an 18th-century British success in arms, in the Caribbean.

Buxton in Derbyshire was also once administered by the Hundred of High Peak.

Attenborough near Nottingham also shares its name with the surname of a wildlife student / film-maker / TV documentary champion of wildlife (Cindy, and David, respectively).

Henry Ireton, parliamentary general and signatory of Charles I's death warrant, was born in Attenborough. He died of plague during the siege of Limerick, his enemies claiming that this was divine retribution for the hanging of a bishop.

Traditional songs about wild young persons of the male persuasion, viz. "rakes": give an association between Limerick, and Mallow some forty miles to the south -- The Limerick Rake, and The Rakes of Mallow.

William Wallace, Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence (as depicted in the film Braveheart), was executed at Smithfield. He is believed to have been born at Elderslie in Renfrewshire.

Stamford (Lincolnshire), like Dunstable, once had -- no more in situ -- one of the twelve Eleanor Crosses built by order of King Edward I to commemorate his deceased wife Eleanor of Castile.

Like Stamford, Hay-on-Wye also straddles two counties on either side of a river, but in this case it also straddles two countries (England and Wales)

Knighton receives at least one mention (in the instance of which I'm thinking, the versifying rather less than elegant) in A.E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad series of poems; Ludlow gets a substantial share of that particular action.

Every year, Tenbury Wells holds a Mistletoe Festival (and large quantities of the plant are sold there on the run-up to Christmas). Concerning the tear-jerking song The Mistletoe Bough (bride playing hide-and-seek hides in chest in attic, can't get out, found as a skeleton years later): there are various apocryphal suggestions as to the place where this supposedly, really happened -- one of such being the rectory at Bawdrip, Somerset (near Bridgwater).

Athelney is strongly associated with King Alfred the Great -- his last stronghold before the tide of war turned in favour of Saxon vis-a-vis Dane. He was born in Wantage, Oxfordshire.

Also excellent for bluebells in the season, are the Clent Hills in the west Midlands; nearest settlement Halesowen.
