For many years, the early 20th Century Prime Minister and the 1st Earl of Oxford H.H. Asquith had his country house at Sutton Courtenay.
Asquith was born into a prosperous family (not in a shoe box in t' middle o' t' road) in the Yorkshire town of Morley.

Perhaps surprisingly, in the era of corporate financial institutions, Earl Shilton has an eponymous and long-established Building Society based in the town.
Another financial powerhouse (home to The Chorley & District Building Society) is the Lancashire town of Chorley.

Not far from Chorley, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal features Botany Bay Boatyard. Another borrowing of the name of Captain Cook's landfall "Down Under", occurs at Broadstairs, Kent: the northernmost of that resort's renowned "Seven Bays", being called Botany Bay.

Oliver Postgate, the writer of the Clangers animated TV series, was a long time resident of Broadstairs and his life is commemorated by a mosaic of the Clangers and a blue plaque on the front of his home in Chandos Square. He was born on 12th April 1925 in Hendon, Middlesex.

The journalist / author / controversialist Louis Theroux has lived for spells, in Harlesden. He studied Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford.

Hilmorton in Warwickshire also lies on the line of the Oxford Canal.

Unity Mitford, one of the six varied and colourful Mitford sisters; lived -- in unhappy personal circumstances -- at the above-bolded settlement during World War II, as a guest of the local vicar and his family. Some quarter-century earlier, the Mitfords dwelt, rather briefly but memorably, at the house and estate of Batsford Park: near Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire.

The "Ladies of Llangollen", Eleanor Butler (1739 - 1829) and Sarah Ponsonby (1755 - 1831) , were two upper-class Irish women whose relationship scandalised and fascinated their contemporaries during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The pair moved to a Gothic house in Llangollen in 1780 after leaving Ireland to escape the social pressures of conventional marriages. Eleanor Charlotte Butler was a member of the Butler family, the Earls and later Dukes of Ormond, whose family seat was Kilkenny Castle. Sarah Ponsonby lived with relatives at the Woodstock Estate, just outside the village of Inistoge, County Kilkenny.

The travel writer and journalist Peter Fleming -- elder brother of Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond -- lived for the latter part of his life in Nettlebed, and is buried there. Ian, who predeceased Peter, is buried at Sevenhampton, Wiltshire (Borough of Swindon).

Thaxted, Essex, also has a Morris-dance side. (Ledbury's are rather splendidly called the Silurian Border Morrismen.)

Durham (at least the cathedral and castle part) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Great Britain is Jodrell Bank Observatory, located in the Cheshire East village of Lower Withington.
