The bridge at Montford Bridge was Thomas Telford's first bridge design. It was built of red sandstone by John Carline and John Tilley between 1790 and 1792, and has three masonry elliptical arch spans, two of 55 ft, and the central one of 58 ft.
John Carline the Second was the son of John Carline the First. He was trained as a stonemason by his father, but showed greater skill in terms of sculpture. He moved with his father to Shrewsbury in 1765. Around 1788 he appears to have set up on his own, specialising in churches and church memorials. He continued to work with John Tilley after his father died until Tilley himself died in 1795. An early work was the tomb of Hester Bright in the village of Lydbury North in Shropshire, which was built in 1791.
