Stevenage has some renown in the field of the making of motorcycles: the HRD company, makers of same, were active there for approximately the second quarter of the 20th century. Also featuring on that scene: the perhaps more famous Norton firm, based in Solihull, West Midlands.

Ormesby St. Michael's church is dedicated to St. Michael ("colour me unsurprised", as they say). The town of Tipperary has a church with the same dedicatee.

On a break in the country in 1915, near Loxhill, Winston Churchill learnt to paint -- this was a valued recreation for him for the rest of his life. The country house of Chartwell -- near Westerham, Kent -- which he subsequently bought; afforded inspiration for many of his paintings.

Shrewley, Warwickshire -- about five miles west of Warwick -- also has a pub called the Durham Ox (seemingly, pretty well England's most southerly pub bearing that name).

Born in Downpatrick, was the journalist, broadcaster, and humorist Miles Kington (1941 -- 2008) -- of Anglo-Welsh parents: his father, an Army officer, was stationed in Northern Ireland at the time of Miles's birth. M.K. lived for his later years -- and is buried -- at Limpley Stoke, Wiltshire. (That settlement was of course one extremity of an unfortunate, but celebrated, Great Western branch line.)

Tiverton, Cheshire (some seven miles north-west of Nantwich, and not to be confused with the much bigger Tiverton in Devon) also has a pub called the Shady Oak.
