Until its being developed in the 19th century as a port for the export of granite, Porth Navas was known as Cove. There are several settlements in the British Isles -- particularly in Scotland -- still bearing that name. A slight variation on that theme, involves Cobh, Co. Cork -- the seaport of Cork city, located on Great Island in Cork Harbour. Paraphrasing Wiki: a couple / three centuries ago, the Royal Navy's port established on Great Island became known as "the Cove of Cork", or just "Cove" -- adjacent to the older village of Ballyvoloon. The combined settlement was renamed "Queenstown" in 1849, on the occasion of a visit by Queen Victoria. Upon the establishing of the Irish Free State, early 1920s, there took place renaming-afresh, to "Cobh": a Gaelicising (no actual meaning in Irish) of the English word "Cove".
