Another of the very many places mentioned in George Borrow's Wild Wales, published 1862, about the author's travels -- chiefly on foot -- through Wales: is Merthyr Tydfil, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough.

The poet and author Norman Nicholson (1914 -- 87) was born and essentially lived all his life, in Millom: his works are intimately associated with and relevant to, this "patch" of the north-west of England. After contracting pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of sixteen, he spent two years in a sanatorium at Linford, Hampshire -- just east of Ringwood.

Abbots Bromley is known for its traditional Horn Dance, performed each year on the first Sunday after 4 September. The Furry Dance is similarly performed each year in Lympstone, Devon.

The pirate John Nutt -- an Englishman, active on both sides of the North Atlantic in the earlier part of the 17th century -- has associations with Lympstone. His more famous counterpart some decades later, Edward Teach alias Blackbeard: is reckoned probably to have been born and spent his early life, in Bristol.

Westbury-on-Trym used to have a pub (now defunct) called the Foresters Tavern. Billingshurst, West Sussex, has a pub -- still active -- called the Foresters' Arms.

Nicholas Culpeper (1616 -- 54), prominent herbalist, botanist, physician, and astrologer: was born in Ockley; but spent his boyhood in Isfield, East Sussex -- north-east of Lewes.

Heathfield, East Sussex -- only a few miles north of Hailsham -- is also twinned with a settlement in the French departement of Seine-Maritime, "just across the water". Hailsham's "twin" is Gournay-en-Bray; Heathfield's is Forges-les-Eaux.

Bradford-born author John Braine (1922-86) worked as a librarian in Bingley before the success of his novel Room at the Top, the setting of which was based on Bingley (fictionalised as Warley). He subsequently moved south to live in Woking, Surrey.
