To be pedantic, the op didn't specify great Britain and I did state British isles, of which Eire is definitely a part.

Are you just looking for passenger trains, or do others count? Some of the RHTT and test train circuits cover the same portion of line twice in the same direction.

Fife Circle trains between Edinburgh and Inverkeithing, although these trains are now all showing as terminating at Glenrothes in the book, presumably to stop people travelling to Glenrothes on a ticket to Rosyth or Dalgety Bay.

The daily Lancaster > Morecambe > Leeds train (as opposed to the usual Morecambe > Lancaster > Leeds route) doubles back between Bare Lane and Morecambe.

All Wirral Line services are shown (e.g.) West Kirby > West Kirby in NRE so double back over nearly their entire length.

I remember many years ago there used to be a train on Sunday mornings from Leeds to Morecambe that went into Bradford Forster Square and out again.

For a few years the daily Brighton > Penzance working was worked into Portsmouth Harbour with a 73 and out with a 50. Prior to this it had been a 33 throughout and had gone direct from Havant to Cosham.

I don't think the OP is asking about reversals - he clearly explains at post #32 he's on about same direction moves.

As a hypothetical example, suppose a train ran from Sunderland to Newcastle via the King Edward Bridge, then carried on to Metrocentre via the High Level Bridge. So it would be doing a loop which included the same track twice in the same direction. I reckon the basic question is does anything like that happen in normal timetabled service?

Clockwise (Salisbury-bound) Salisbury 6 services, I believe, do. They depart from the down platform* at Romsey, then after passing through Southampton, call at the down platform again on their way to Salisbury. They certainly retain the same headcode doing this.



*My memory tells me that down is towards Salisbury because this was originally a route to London from Salisbury via Eastleigh and down the SWML, and I don't have access to my map this instant. If I'm wrong about this, replace "down" with "up"

Georgemas Junctions - Thurso - Georgemas Junction - Wick.

If I remember right this counts as the headcode etc stay the same?
