Services that cover the same route twice

Dear all,

Does anybody know of any services that would traverse the same interlocking route twice? I.e under the same service/headcode without changing.

I can't think of any but it's a question i've been asked.

Cheers

Matt.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but the yellow line of the Tyne & Wear Metro loops round and crosses over itself. It calls at 'Monument' station twice, but at different platforms each time.

In the '80s at least once I was on the midnightish Sheffield - St Pancras which went Sheffield - Toton - TRENT - Derby - TRENT - Nottingham -TRENT -St Pancras. Always a Class 45.

Some of the Wirral Line Routes on Merseyrail spring to mind Chester - Chester or Ellesmere Port - Ellesmere Port. But i'm not sure if they change headcodes or keep the same one

Just looking at Trent station, it really was in the middle of nowhere!

Some of the late evening Lincoln-Nottinghams will go down the spur into Newark North Gate p3, reverse back up the same single line to the flat crossing and then continue to Newark Castle.

The Wirral Line routes operate as Chester-Chester but they don't go down the same line twice.

The Circle line "teacup" gets interesting at Praed St Junction:
Hammersmith-Edgware Road-Aldgate-Victoria-Edgware Road (then reverse).

I'm not sure what you mean either, but I caught an XC Sunday service at Newport, from Gloucester, that had gone all the way from STJ and then went back to STJ to get to Bristol Parkway, where it reversed again to go down to Temple Meads. I believe the headcode did not change.

Most services that reverse during their journey will at least pass one signal and interlocking point before continuting as it is very rare for a service not to leave the platform in the same direction it arrived at. As an example, all XC at Reading (bar Guildford services) will reverse in platforms 8-11 and run back out over the same set of points they arrived over.

Would the Cannon St (SE) and Waterloo (SWT) circular services count?

If they count, then the future St Pancras International High Speed circulars (St Pancras - Stratford - Ebbsfleet - Ashford - Ramsgate - Faversham - Ebbsfleet - Stratford - St Pancras) would too (although exact service details remain unclear currently).

Norwich trains also do that at Ely & occasionally at Nottingham.

We have a service up here that does that, but it has to because of the track configuration (Glasgow Central - Kilmarnock - Ayr)

Going back to the OP, as a sometime signal engineer I interpret an "interlocking route" as a route from one signal to another in a particular direction, so the train would have to pass over the track between the same pair of signals in the same direction twice. I don't think any of the suggestions posted qualify.

The only one I can think of that might do is if any trains between the Sunderland and Carlisle lines use the "wrong" bridges to access Newcastle Central and therefore pass twice over the section past where Gateshead depot used to be. Even then I'm not sure whether there is an intermediate signal between the two triangular junctions (excluding the one protecting the second junction). If not it wouldn't qualify either.

A train of this type would probably cause a meltdown in the Automatic Route Setting!

I have been on Euston - Wolverhampton trains that have diverted at Stetchford to Aston and travelled from Aston - Perry Barr and then via Soho to enter New Street from the North. Then leaving New Street by the south end and travelling via Duddeston and Aston - Perry Barr again and then via Bescot to Wolverhampton

There was a summer Saturday train scheduled to do this properly. Weymouth to Nottingham, into New Street from Reading through Solihull then, to save reversing when it was busy, continuing through University and round the Lifford Curve. After the Camp Hill line it would briefly use the same bit of track it had used on he way into New Street at Bordesley before heading off towards Saltley.

I think this also went via Leicester and used the then rare Nuneaton avoiding line.

I was just about to say exactly the same thing - I've tried, and failed, to think of any other interpretation! I agree that nothing suggested so far qualifies - the loop around the Tyne seems most likely, but I'm pretty sure that there's only one signal on the 'common' section.

Could Cromer qualify? The junction is some way from the station...

Killareny in Eire would probably be the only one in the British Isles otherwise.

Just thought of one: 05:45 Lancaster - Windermere goes into platform 1 at Morecambe and then runs back down the same line before being diverted into the northern platform at Bare Lane

The least train from Victoria to Worthing. Comes into platform 3, then reverses and uses a point halfway down the platform to access the line to hove and the west coast lines. (4 cars max).

I think you meant Killarney, but there is also Kilkenny where every Dublin-Waterford service and v.v. (except one) retraces its steps for 2.5 miles.

What about the XC Cardiff Central - Manchester Picc via. Bristol Temple Meads service? The route must be covered twice between Filton Abbey Wood and Bristol Temple Meads.

Perhaps it'd be a good opportunity to restate the OP's reference to "interlocking route" and edwin_m's further explanation in post #19.

I would like to point out that Ireland is not part of Great Britain.
