I'd assume just local door. It's probably something to do with the way they're wired as to the SDO. I don't know, I don't work on the railway!

Yes, Mottisfont and Dunbridge Platform 1 is local door for a 159, Platform 2 is long enough to take a 159.

I can think of the following trains which have full SDO where you can choose any amount of coaches.

• 376 - Southeastern

376 is individual door(s) can be locked out. You can't select by number of coaches. You have to go into the Mitrac and manually lock doors out.

Every station on the Kyle line has a big enough platform for a 158, the only stations north of Inverness with short platforms are Beauly and Conon Bridge where only the rear door of the leading coach is operated.

Attadale & Duncraig at least are are local door only

Apart from the 175s, 180s, 7xxs, and possibly the 378s and 222s did any others in the list have SDO as built instead of being installed at a later time?

What happens if a train that has SDO gets coupled to a train that doesnt have SDO? For example i know 170 Turbostars with SDO sometimes get coupled to 150 / 153 / 156 / 158 Sprinters without SDO. I presume that the SDO wouldnt work (or would it just work for the 170 coaches)?

Yep.

And the 376 system is a lot less sophisticated that the 375 system. The 375 system is proper SDO linked to GPS. At platforms shorter than the train's formation the driver presses "sdo release" and "door release" buttons and only the appropriate number of doors open based on the train's location. Pressing "door release" and "door release" will have no effect at SDO locations but will open all the doors at longer platforms.

On the 376 you press "all release" and "door release" at all locations. The "sdo release" button is there but, as far as I'm aware, is non functional.

Do the gwr sprinter family not have UDS? On a strengthened train I'd imagine quite a few stations between Bristol and Southampton would struggle to hold a 6x23m

I would presume the 158s at least would have a similar system to the SWT 15x mentioned earlier, but happy to be corrected on that.

Interesting... 377's have an updated system where-by "SDO Release" is no longer there, the system is always on. Driver on 377's just press the 2 Door Release buttons and the trains works out how many doors need to open. Stations with various platforms lengths have SDO Beacons, so Mitrac knows how many doors to open.

Hmm, I'm unsure - I've only ever seen units locked out of use. Generally GWR services on this route don't operate with more than 5 coaches due to platform lengths, though due to disruption, I have seen 6 coaches working. The only time I've used it, the drivers door on the hybrid unit was locked shut so you couldn't access the last coach at the back.

I am pretty sure that the SWT 158s and 159s are the only Sprinters to have any form of Selective Door Opening or Unit De Select. I believe the GWR ones just have to use local door only.

That's a pretty major briefing difference for the loaned out units then, something as major as UDS would be covered slightly better I'd have hoped. I'm probably barking up the wrong tree completely. I'll ask a local GWR next time I see one.

The briefing is simply that SDO is not to be used (they don't have deselect). Everything else remains the same across both fleets.

The SWT fleet was retrofitted, none of the Sprinters were built with SDO and the GWR fleet hasn't had it fitted since. SWT use their fleet up nine car formation, I don't think anybody else comes close on a regular basis.

Longest SWT sprinter formation is ten cars, 0541 Yeovil Pen Mill to London Waterloo [I assume from Salisbury] & 0850 London Waterloo to Salisbury.

Although with the service to Salisbury the rear 158 is locked out of use.

Can anyone confirm do the 175s have full SDO that allows the Guard to open up any amount of coaches (similar to the 180s) or do they only have unit de select?

All GA170s have a de-Select facility so that the doors on the rear vehicle will not release.

I don't disagree with you at all but I clearly remember the MML 170/1s had deselect which operated on the leading vehicle only, we used to use it on an evening peak service of 2 units at Long Eaton by running off the platform to deselect the driving vehicle, mind you, the last time I drove one was when the 222s were being introduced so alterations may well have been made since then

As far as I'm aware they're only in the end vehicles. But could be wrong.

EDIT: Just checked and they are indeed only at the ends with the cabs.

You are corret, only the guards panels behind the cabs have the extra switch.

No nothing, all that happens is the rear unit(s) would be locked out of use.

Ours where totally different in the same way many MML units had battery power fed between vehicles. For all the add ons you could have Anglia pathetically never invested in this basic option. We will never ever know why.

During storm Doris, a tree came down at Woolston, and 1F18 made a wrong direction move from Swanwick back to Fareham. The unit was then attached to 1F20 in the platform at Fareham so you had a 158/9 and a 3 car hybrid 150. Both units were rammed with passengers. Unless a unit was taken back off at Westbury this may have caused issues.

Not a major issue, just requires some locking out of doors at certain stops. If there's a second Guard on board that would help.

Ah that makes sense. Indeed there would have been 2 lots of crew on the train.
