Does anyone know which classes of unit have selective door opening, and which ones do not?

For example, I am fairly sure that Class 350 Desiros do have SDO, and I think Class 222 Meridians do, but Class 170s and Class 220/221 Voyagers do not because the train operators did not specify SDO when they ordered them.

Before anyone jumps in. What kind of SDO do you mean ? There have been various iterations of SDO.

I meant any kind of SDO. I believe that some unit have SDO that allows the driver or guard to lock individual doors, some only allow the doors in entire cars to be locked, and some only allow the doors in either all eight or four out of the eight cars of the train to be released.

The 350s like the 185 have UDB - Unit Door Blocking. This is a form of SDO but it prevents the doors opening on trailing units. For example an 8 car 350 with UDB active will prevent the doors opening on the rear 4 coaches. The 185s should gain ASDO (Automatic SDO) when they go through the refurbishment programme.

SDO fitted stock that I know of are 175, 180, 377, 390.

350s don't, I believe it is unit deselect when pairs call at short platforms.

444, 450 & 458s have SDO

There are several forms that SDO can take, so the answer isn't just a simple list of has/has nots. For instance, the class 466 can selectively keep shut the frontmost and/or rearmost doors, but has no provision for other door opening layouts. Other SDO implementations have control to open only the front x coaches, but cannot open the back x coaches. It's a complex topic and is almost always designed with specific places in mind (historically, particularly pre-privatisation).

That's a bit surprising as Scotrail operate 170s on routes where stations are shorter than the train. It just increases dwell times, which is unfortunate for the TOC and the crew onboard, especially when the train is running late.

All GA170s have a de-Select facility so that the doors on the rear vehicle will not release.

All 390's have auto SDO with a manual override although it only need to be used on the 11 car sets.

Don't GWR's HSTs have SDO in that the guard can release all door ahead of his local door?

171s have a door deselect system which will release the doors between the active driving cab and the coach (not specifically the local door) in which the door deselect button is pressed. This must be carried out manually by the traincrew (normally drivers on the Marshlink, conductors everywhere else).

442s have a unit deselect system which is used by the driver when they operate on certain routes.

377s and 387s have automatic SDO which releases doors on a coach-by-coach basis, based on location, though it can also be manually overridden on a door-by-door basis.

Much of the Bombardier stock on the Underground has one form or another of SDO.

Don't GWR's HSTs have SDO in that the guard can release all door ahead of his local door?

I don't sign the HST fleet, but I seem to remember they can also select the doors in rear of the local door.

SWT's 159's have SDO and I would guess the 158's are fitted as well.

Will SDO and unit deselect just differ in the electronics used to implement them or do they have different wiring to the doors as well?

Local door only, similar to other stations on the Kyle line with tiny platform

Every station on the Kyle line has a big enough platform for a 158, the only stations north of Inverness with short platforms are Beauly and Conon Bridge where only the rear door of the leading coach is operated.

Back Cab
Unit Door Blocking on TPE 185 and 350 which basically means all doors behind the active UDB switch (found only in the cabs) will not open, otherwise its locking individual doors out manually, which is what currently happens at WAC and LPY. Current instructions a UDB'd unit cannot convey pax in service.

Class 172s (with LM at least) are fully SDO fitted. I was under impression that the LM 170s had SDO, although perhaps it's just a case of unit deselect (I'm thinking of the old Bromsgrove station).

I can think of the following trains which have full SDO where you can choose any amount of coaches.
• 158 - South West Trains
• 159 - South West Trains
• 170 - London Midland
• 170 - South West Trains (i presume the 168/3 as they are now known as still have it)
• 171 - Southern
• 172 - Chiltern Railways
• 172 - London Midland
• 172 - London Overground
• 175 - Arriva Trains Wales
• 180 - Arriva Grand Central
• 180 - First Hull Trains
• 180 - Great Western Railway
• 222 - East Midlands Trains
• 357 - C2C
• 375 - Southeastern
• 376 - Southeastern
• 377 - Southeastern
• 377 - Southern
• 377 - Thameslink
• 378 - London Overground
• 379 - Abellio Greater Anglia
• 387 - C2C
• 387 - Gatwick Express
• 387 - Great Northern
• 387 - Great Western Railway
• 387 - Thameslink
• 444 - South West Trains
• 450 - South West Trains
• 458 - South West Trains
• 700 - Thameslink
• 707 - South West Trains
• 717 - Great Northern (i know they havent even been built yet but they are almost certainly going to have it)

I can think of the following trains which have SDO which allows you to select how many units to open but not how many carriages to open. For example on a 350 you can open 4 coaches or 8 coaches or 12 coaches of the train. This system was previously used on the 444s and 450s but they have since been upgraded.
• 185 - First Trans Pennine Express
• 350 - London Midland
• 360 - Abellio Greater Anglia
• 360 - Heathrow Connect
• 360 - Heathrow Express

I am not entirely sure but i presume most other 168s and 170s have SDO? Also i am not sure if 334s and 380s (and soon the 385s also) have SDO?

158/159 have unit deselect, there is a "selective" button above the door open buttons which will release doors ahead of that panel.

So isnt that full SDO rather than unit deselect? For example cant the Guard on a 3 coach 159 go to a panel in the second coach and it will only open the doors in front if them (the first and second coaches but not the third)?

As far as I'm aware they're only in the end vehicles. But could be wrong.

EDIT: Just checked and they are indeed only at the ends with the cabs.

I am pretty sure that SWT 158s and 159s do have Guards door control panels at every set of doors. The Abellio Scotrail / Arriva Trains Wales / East Midlands Trains / Great Western Railway ones might only have them at the ends of each units but i am 99% sure i have seen them at every door on the 158s and 159s that SWT have.

Let's rephrase that: Every door has a panel but only the panels next to the cabs have SDO.

Ah sorry i thought you meant the only panels were at the ends of the units. My apologies. That does seem strange to only have the SDO controls at the end coaches but not in the other panels! What happens when a 159 calls at Mottisfont & Dunbridge which can only fit two coaches (i know 159s have been used on these services in the past)?

I'd assume just local door. It's probably something to do with the way they're wired as to the SDO. I don't know, I don't work on the railway!

Ah ok. That would make sense. Am i correct in thinking the SWT 158s and 159s are the only sprinters to have any form of SDO? I think all other TOCs sprinters just use local door at short platforms?

XC 170s certainly have full SDO
