Seen as how we all seemed to enjoy the Best/Worst Towns thread, and that I am always complaining about various seaside resorts (with others to a degree), I decided to make a thread about it.

So what resorts do we like, and not like? Needless to say, I do not like Southend all that much, although there are worse ones in my opinion! Most of coastal Kent could trump Southend even if Southend was suddenly hit by a nuclear bomb (and not just becuase they would be affected by radiation either). Scarborough is not particularly nice either for me. On the other hand, the resort whose name is closest to Southend - Southport - is among my favourite towns in England.

Apparently everyone likes to be beside the seaside... Time to prove it! Or would you rather disprove it...?

Hmm let me think,

As I live near Tynemouth I would have to say that is a contender, sadly Whitley Bay seems to be going downhill (well apart from the fantastic football team), I also adore Whitby but have not been there for years!

Going further I really like Ryde and Shanklin, not quite a resort I also like Lymington.

The worst I think is Smegness, full of drunk Glaswegian Chavs, dull town centre and very little to do. Also very difficult to get out of! I also visited New Brighton years ago and thoght it a total cess pit, especially the crummy hotel I stayed in!

Heading abroad, Pattaya, Dailian and Oostende are canny places too, although the less said about Pattaya the better! <D

Folkestone? Got potential, but at present is an absolute dump. The only decent part now is The Leas. Folkestone is on my list of worst seaside resorts. For some reason i like Morecambe. Not sure why.
Dungeness is really interesting.
Another one which is a dump. Dymchurch, or Grymchurch as I know it!!
Oh, and perhaps its because i live right outside it, but i find Hythe to be boring. Again, could be because its far too local.

Mousehole is nice, but it's tiny! I couldn't live there for that reason.

I have to agree with junglejames regarding Folkestone though.

By the way, does anyway else notice a distinct lack of west coast resorts (barring St Ives, which is pretty much the most southerly town on the west coast!) in yorksrob's list...?

Weston isn't bad, Rhyl was ok and Paignton is interesting enough (anywhere you can see the sea is a coastal resort to me).
However, since the last time I set foot anywhere near the sea was in 1998 my opinions are truly outdated. Does Southend have Britain's/Europe's* longest pier (perfect for chavs to drive a nova off)

*delete as appropriate?

Just a couple of alterations to that, including your requested answer.

Cheers for that, for some reason it eluded my mind.

I've not actually been to Weston since about 92 when I was the grand old age of 4 so can't be too exact. More childhood memories and the inland sprawl of Brum lol

Geordie back from exile.
A couple of years ago I drove along the coast from Paignton to Brighton trying to take in as many towns and beaches as possible and was actually quite taken aback at some of them, Lyme Regis & Weymouth in particular impressed me, maybe I'm easily impressed though .

I like Torquay as a seaside town but it seems to have gone back a bit in recent years. I first went there in about 1990 or something and loved the place, it was thriving town with a marvellous waterfront but the last time I was there in 2009 it seemed a lot less friendly and not as clean as I remember it. Certainly doesn't make me want to go back there in a hurry any more. I could also fit Scarborough in that category too I think.

Weston Super Mare was a let down for me,

There are a number of beaches I like more than the towns close by including Skeggy, Mabelthorpe, Aberavon (Port Talbot is the town?)

I do like Morecambe & Bridlington but I still have the fondest memories of Penzance. I think it was the fish and chips from the chippy near the train station that sways me.

I will admit to not visiting many resorts on the north coasts of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, just not many trains there. Must explore more of that area one day.

We like Mevagissey and Looe in Cornwall last year, but St Ives was a bit of a disappointment! Had a very good and boiling hot pasty in Penzance as well by the way!

In other areas, like Ilfracombe, Aberystwyth, Sheringham, Cromer and Weymouth, dislike Tenby, Worthing, Llandudno and Blackpool, hate Great Yarmouth!

The list seems a bit random now, I can only think it may be more to do with the food I have had in each town!

I've always had a soft spot for Wells-next-the-Sea and Sheringham on the Norfolk coast. I think my fondness for Sheringham was born out of being able to arrive by heritage railway!

As for closer to home, I have a big soft spot for Mablethorpe. I'm sure anyone who has visited will wonder why, but it was our local day out for many years, and therefore the place has a special place in my memory.

The Best - Whitby or Sands End or Robin Hoods Bay, north Norfolk coast is beautiful, in the south west Bude, Padstow, St Ives, Durham coast (not Hartlepool!) is also very nice as is the Northumberland coast (which i wish they would stop advertising - it was our little northern secret - keep away! lol)

The Worst - Great Yarmouth ( how bad must it be if Jim Davidson has to buy the theatre in your town just to get a gig!) Saarfend, also Blackpool but that is a bit love/hate. I shouldnt like it , it is a dump but just down the road is wonderful.

I forgot about Brighton, its a great Town and the best Chinese Restaurant in the UK (say's my Wife). I like the vibe there, the people are freindly and the whole place seems pretty well kept....oh and it has the Volks Railway!

I forgot to add Blackpool to the list of the worst, I hate the whole place its tacky, the bars are full of nutters from all over the place, it feels dangerous of a night time and everything is over priced. The tram ride to Fleetwood is canny though!

OK then; time for me to do a list...

Like: Southport, St Ives, Weymouth, Looe
Indifferent: Blackpool, Paignton, Poole, Eastbourne, Exmouth, Canvey Island
Dislike: Brighton, Bournemouth, Southend, Clacton, Scarborough, Great Yarmouth, Torquay [interesting how most of the prominent ones are here]
Despise: Margate, Ramsgate, Folkestone, Weston

Living in Cornwall, I may have a slight 'bias' but anyone with a train service is best!! Shame places like Padstow and Bude don't anymore, scandalous still....

I used to end up at Morecambe quite a bit in University days but haven't since then - seemed quite grimey!

As for Folkestone, it's certainly more down at heel since my childhood (flattening the amusement park and market etc probably hasn't improved it's outlook), but the area around the harbour is still nice.

Oh, and I forgot to add Sheringham on my list of nice ones.

Agree with DarloRich about Seahouses and Bamburgh - used to have a holiday home not too far away (in Wooler) - beautiful part of the world.

Actually living in a seaside resort (Ilfracombe), I obviously get a different perspective to most people. Whilst visitors will be looking for scenery, local shops, restaurants, museums and galleries, good weather etc, I would look at convenience shopping, transport, good pubs etc.
In that respect, Ilfracombe has improved vastly in the past few years - the Barnstaple Western Bypass has made getting here a hell of a lot easier (though public transport is still not really an option until you get to Barnstaple), the arrival of Tesco and Lidl, whilst basic for most towns, means that you no longer have to travel large distances for a weekly shop, and a lot of the run down pubs, clubs and shops have been done up, though of course there's still one or two holes that need filling.

Woolacombe is a great example of how toursts and locals may see a place differently. A visitor may notice the ram packed beach, rip-off parking, crowded village centre and holiday camps, whilst somebody like me can park at a mates all day in peak summer, walk down to a quieter area of the beach, walk 5 minutes to a quieter pub and have a barbeque at your mates. Nothing better in the sun. 8-)

There is only one problem with Southport.
Is it classed as being a seaside resort when the tide goes out so far?
When I lived on the the Promenade there for about 5 years you could go for days and not see the sea.
I think the record low tide went out about 5 miles.

Hmm, I too (as an adopted Southendian for the last few years) am not crazy about the town. Being so close to London makes it a bit more cultured than it would otherwise be, believe it or not! It's definitely smarter than it once was (the less said about some of the new university buildings despoiling the town skyscape the better), but there's a lot that could be done to improve the place, if some imagination was to be found. But, yes, anywhere - anywhere, without exception, well, except for Whitstable - on the north-facing side of Kent is far, far worse! (in pat I blame this on the quality of light resulting from the sea being to the north) Margate (and especially Cliftonville)is just dire, and when I last visited Herne Bay struck me as being overly well provided with tattoo and piercing parlours for such a small place! Great Yarmouth is dire in the extreme. Canvey is not exactly pleasant - but kind of interesting in a slightly horrific manner.

Loved St Andrews when I was a student there, but calling that a "seaside resort" (even though it is), seems to understate it somewhat! Some of the other villages on the opposite coast of Fife (which I suppose are mostly rather upmarket seaside resorts), especially Crail and Elie/Earlsferry are lovely, too, St Monans and Pittenweem pleasant enough, Anstruther (Easter) rather less so. And the whole Leven-Buckhaven-Methil conurbation is worth avoiding, as is Tayport. (But maybe here we are stretching from "seaside resort" to "coastal town", which is not quiet the same thing) Portobello (although it's really part of Edinburgh) is alright.

And in Essex...given that we have one of the longest coastlines in the country Clacton is vile, Jaywick worse (although kind of interesting for its uniqueness. Where else can you find muddy, unpaved streets named after brands of cars, filled with strange shacks that started out as summer houses, and really should have stayed that way). Frinton pleasant if excessively respectable, Walton-on-the-Naze has some charm, once you get to the Naze itself particularly.

Harwich is a curious and somewhat incoherent place, still a working port, with a rather characterful old town, a perpetually run-down area around the main shopping street (near Dovercourt station), and a fine beach-and-cliffs-setup along the south coast of the estuary.

Burnham-on-Crouch has a lot of appealing things about it, but, as far as I know, no decent restaurant for many miles around.

Brightlingsea is the place that the last few decades forgot (still, maybe that is fewer decades than some of those places I mentioned in Fife), but none the worse for it. Very slow-moving, isolated and mostly agreeable, I think.

Maldon - 2nd nicest town in Essex I reckon (after Saffron Walden). Characterful and filled with good things. Pity there are no trains!
A small selection from elsewhere in the UK...

Brighton is in spirit as much a city as a seaside resort, with all the pros and cons that it brings, Bognor Regis....is to my mind unremarkable, Sandown and Shanklin both...about the landscape (and palm trees when they were still a novelty in the UK), but not very much more.

Haven't been to Blackpool or Hastings for over 20 years, so they may have changed a great deal in the meantime, so I won't comment.

Nuclear power station places too small and remote to really qualify as resorts: Dungeness and Bradwell-juxta-Mare- both rather fascinating, peculiar, wonderful, scenic bits of remoteness, with the steam railway in one and the 6th century chapel in the other adding to the interests

And (token Welsh seaside resort I've been to) Cric(c)ieth seemed alright enough, I suppose. if a bit insecure about how many "c"s it has in its name.

I think you've been unreasonably kind to Jaywick there, if I'm honest! There is not one nice thing about it! Even the people are quite rude, even by Essex standards.

I've never been to Saffron Walden. However, I can often tell just by looking at a map whether I will like somewhere or not (Southport being the one obvious exception to the rule), and it has certainly fared well by the preliminary judgment. Such places that failed include Guildford (vile place), Basingstoke (Extended Town) and Bradford (see Guildford). I've also only ever once been to Maldon (and then ~15 years ago, when I was 6 I think so 16 years ago), and er... I nearly drowned. Whoops. I wouldn't have another near-death experience until at Paddington last year.

I love the ambiance and feeling of seaside places, but there are some really dreadful ones. In my neck of the woods I think Skegness is quite bad in terms of "chavness". I much prefer Mablethorpe but this can look very run down.... If you are into modified cars I suggest a trip to Cleethorpes at night as the seafront seems to become a racetrack. I have to say that I cannot stand Blackpool - I went there with a friend to see the illuminations in 2006 and nearly got beaten up in a McDonalds for no reason other than I was there.

I love Sidmouth, Lyme Regis, Clevedon&Weston-Super-Mare (holidays as a child there and family there now), the Dorset coast is beautiful, as are the coastal areas of North Wales.

Ivo, in Jaywick's defence: (1) it has some of the finest and widest sandy beaches in the south of England; (2) the martello tower (now used as an art gallery/history museum) adds a certain something... Otherwise, it reminds me of being in a particularly impoverished bit of Romania - barely like being in the UK at all. (Hah, the seafood shell that boasted it sells "muscles" last time I was there did raise a laugh)

Living on the Fylde Coast fairly close to Blackpool, many of the locals not involved in tourism absolutely loathe the tourists (especially some of the dregs!). I wouldn't say the town is all that bad safety wise, steer clear of the bad spots and you'll be fine (like anywhere really). The place is trying to change (a lot of "regeneration" is happening) but without a complete fresh start and a better class of tourist not a lot will happen.

The area inland of Blackpool (including most of the suburbs) and to the south (Lytham St. Annes) are respectable and rather wealthy in parts. Lytham St. Annes certainly used to attract wealthy, older tourists.

I am not a huge fan of seaside resorts, living close to arguably the most notorious one ruins the novelty completely for me. I appreciate hilly inland towns/villages!

Great Yarmouth, Skegness and Cleethorpes really are the pits.
St. Ives and Sennen Cove are beautiful, spoilt only by the amount of north midlanders and northerners there in the summer dropping litter everywhere and overloading local surgeries when the idiots have fallen asleep in the sun and are now suffering with sunstroke and sunburn (despite the warnings).
Hunstanton's lovely. Back to Corwall and Porthcurno and Penberth Cove are lovely.

If you get a run of sunny days i think the Northumberland coast is one of the best areas of this country. The Durham coast further south is also nice. You wouldnt think that some of the beaches there used to be black with coal waste

I used to Live in Barnstaple so know your patch quite well. Traffic can be a big problem down the coast road BUT there are some wonderful spots down that way. Even some the tourists havent found yet. Much better than Great Yarmouth where i also used to live!

Whilst I cant defend Margate, the other two places in Kent you mention are nice in my opinion, if only in parts :) Folkestone's harbour area and town centre isnt too bad, although it's main seafront area could do with being made better somewhat. Ramsgate, in my opinion, just has a fair bit of charm to it, especially along the front itself (although I accept that, again, there are some areas I wouldn't want to live - thankfully I live at the nicer end of town!)

Just to add one that hasnt already been mentioned - Broadstairs (in between the two mentioned above :P ) is actually really nice, by far the best of the Thanet towns, and has a very lively atmosphere, especially in summer! Also, I have a soft spot for the Suffolk coast, especially the area south of Lowestoft - maybe it's a decade of going on holiday there every year but I love it! :)
