Seems norrtag are having train shortages, seems everything too haparanda for last week has been cancelled and replaced with taxis , any news on how long that’s expected to last?
Yes, they are, and sadly no, there isn't.
Norrtåg have been quite assertive with its PR this winter, inviting journalists from local newspapers and local TV to visit its workshops in Umeå to show the problems caused by cold weather. To an extent, Norrtåg blame Trafikverket for deciding to close railway lines due to forecast extreme cold (lower than -35°) or storms. Norrtåg argue that Trafikverket are being too cautious in closing lines, and that parking trains (usually outside depots) causes snow and ice build-up to freeze ever harder. There isn't enough indoor depot space for the whole fleet, so when bogies, brakes or other components freeze, trains have to wait their turn to thaw in the workshops.
Lots of folk (especially older Swedes) are mocking what seems to be a new cautiousness about extreme cold, but both Trafikverket and train operators are fearful of a train breaking down and losing heat far from a road in extreme cold.
Norrtåg's fleet is relatively unchanged for several years now, with: 3 x X11 for Umeå-Vännäs-Vindeln-Hällnäs commuter trains; 4 x X52 for Luleå-Haparanda, Luleå-Kiruna and Umeå-Luleå; and 12 x X62 Coradias for everything south of Umeå. (The
Itino diesel railcar is gone, and passenger service won't be restored Hällnäs-Lycksele until the line is electrified.) All fleets them have had some faults this winter meaning all fleets and routes are affected.
The X11 are - as I have experienced it as a commuter into Umeå - the most unreliable of the whole fleet. Early-morning trains on the Umeå- Hällnäs corridor often to be cancelled before the first turn, suggesting they have developed faults overnight. Although these are older, simpler and Swedish-built trains, they were not designed for use in the north and are clearly struggling with cold weather reliability.
Luleå - Haparanda has been suffering almost blanket cancellations for weeks now. Only X52 with ERTMS can be used on that line, and they are needed to reinforce the more heavily trafficked Luleå - Umeå route.
Sundsvall - Umeå has also experienced cancellations.
There are 5 more X52 coming from the Transitio fleet in early summer. They're being displaced by new trains for Västtrafik, so when they arrive (and whether they need any refurbishment) means timetables won't change substantially until next winter. But the idea is for them to allow almost hourly Umeå - Sundsvall trains and to provide better reinforcement for the fleet, particularly the X11.
Norrtåg just got the fourth of its four owning counties to commit to the financing needed to buy new trains, so through Transitio they will start a procurement soon for new rolling stock. The earliest they could be in service is 2031,

Historic investment in northern Sweden – Norrtåg procures new regional trains for 3.8 billion
2026-02-25
Norrtåg is facing the largest vehicle investment in the company's history. After all four owners have now decided on the guarantee, the procurement of new regional trains can begin. This is a crucial step in implementing "Train Vision 2040" and developing train traffic in northern Sweden.
Region Norrbotten has today decided to enter into a guarantee for Norrtåg AB in connection with the procurement of new regional trains. This means that all four owners have made corresponding decisions, and Norrtåg can now formally initiate the procurement of approximately 20 new vehicles.
The decision marks the start of one of the largest investments in Norrtåg's history and is a crucial step in implementing "Train Vision 2040", the joint long-term plan for the development of regional train traffic in northern Sweden. The cost ceiling for the new vehicles, including high-value components and project costs, totals SEK 3.8 billion.
"This is a historic and very important decision. Now we can continue traffic after 2030 and take the next step towards realising "Train Vision 2040". New trains are a prerequisite for us to be able to meet the growing travel on today's routes and the new lines," says Joakim Berg, CEO of Norrtåg AB.
The trains being procured will partly replace existing vehicles that will reach the end of their technical lifespan in the coming years, and partly enable increased traffic as the North Bothnia Line [Umeå - Skellefteå - Luleå] is completed and traffic is expanded on additional routes throughout Norrtåg-land.
The new trains will be longer and will accommodate more passengers. They are modern and robust, adapted to the climate in northern Sweden. At the same time, they will meet the growing number of travellers and function equally well for daily commuting as for longer trips between the region's towns and cities.
Today, around 1.6 million trips are made per year with Norrtåg. According to "Train Vision 2040", travel is expected to increase to between 3.5 and 5 million trips by 2040, as the region grows, new industries are established, and more people choose to live and work in northern Sweden.
The fastest possible delivery time when ordering trains is between four and five years, which is why it is important that the decision is made now. The trains that Norrtåg is procuring are expected to be delivered in 2031-2032.
"The regional train is an important enabler in the development of northern Sweden. When we invest in new vehicles, we are also investing in the region's accessibility, labour market and cohesion. It is a strategic investment to meet the development taking place in the north and create the conditions for growing travel," says Joakim Berg.
The investment is being carried out through the jointly owned company AB Transitio, which is responsible for the procurement and financing of the vehicles. With the decisions in place, work is now underway to secure the next generation of regional trains for northern Sweden.
