So no new projects in 19/20? The rolling program has hit the buffers?

Edit:

A bit further digging reveals table 10.05 which reveals that after a sharp drop from £310m in 17/18 to £183m in 18/19, franchise spending more than doubles in 19/20 to £417m, presumably the impact of the new sleeper franchise?

Actual infrastructure spending is harder to quantify given the new split of enhancements.

Total Infra and major projects spend in 17/18 was £462m in 17/18, rising to £619m in 18/19 as EGIP and SDA were delivered but drops to £569 in 19/20 with £207 allocated to major projects (the final bill for Shotts and Glasgow QS making up most of that?)

Surely there’s works to be undertaken under normal rules of the route to complete after 31 March. You’ve also got the footbridge at Stirling to go back in, which is part of the rolling electrification programme.

Development at Stirling station is mentioned. But the fact remains that the first item in the list is the continuation of the Rolling Program. And since Shotts will be at least 99% complete by March 31st, there clearly is no rolling program.

But Pendolinos don't go over the Forth Bridge and are unlikely ever to do so.

Have you not heard of the proposal for Virgin West Coast to run from London Euston to Inverness via Carlisle, Falkirk, Kirkcaldy, Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen? :lol::lol::lol::lol:

That's as maybe. We are just debating with the "It can't be done" contingent.
As the UK never seems to be able to afford rolling stock for our railway, and with all the EMU's that are apparently coming off lease it is worth thinking about how a big enough fleet can be created economically for future work. Now that roof-top 25kV jumpers are established on the Pendolinos perhaps the redundant EMUs could have an extra pan well put into the roof of the car next to the existing pan for our Forth Bridge special fleet!

The Pendolino only has a spare pan well due to the vagaries of the procurement of the extra coaches, and it's unlikely to be repeated on any future build. Instead future intercity stock, if not fully bi-mode, may have an auxiliary diesel like the electric 80x variants or perhaps a battery with similar size and range. As they wouldn't be stopping at the stations either end of the bridge these units would coast across most of the time and the auxiliary engine could get them out of trouble if they did have to stop.

The problem is much more with future stopping trains, which would more likely be off-the-shelf EMU designs so a second pantograph and attendant 25kV jumper would be a non-standard and expensive design change. Again I think it's more likely that these units would be available with a battery option which could be specified for trains diagrammed to use these routes. Always assuming some means isn't found of extending the wires over the bridge...

86638 is doing the honours on its own.

Vid on Facebook last night indicated it would be 86638 + IKA wagon + 86627. No idea if there was some issue that meant only 638 could go out or if that was always the plan

I don’t see why that would be required..? They’ll be Route Cleared when the time comes, which is a paper exercise, but there’s no need for dynamic on load testing of each different type of traction over a route.

Don't the Pendolinos get used to test the OLE at maximum load though as they are very power hungry? They have been on the Manchester to Liverpool, Preston to Blackpool, Preston to Manchester schemes so far.

Are those not all routes that VT drivers sign anyway, though? Which presumably makes it relatively easy to do, given you don't also need to get a route conductor in…

For the record some Virgin drivers sign the Benhar. As I say, from the perspective of a reasonably well informed insider I don’t see class 390 traction specific test runs as being particularly likely but who knows.

Pendo's are route cleared in passive mode for Shotts Line.

I would imagine so - without checking the sectional appendix, the only "tilt active" route i have been involved in the the West Coast - the route need TASS transponders fitted lineside - plus there is a whole lot of pain with passing clearances, vehicle to vehicle clearances - not to mention clearances when the tilt mechanism fails - hence "passive mode"
