I seen a 2 car 170 the other day there. What is up with its centre car? Assuming it's normally a 3 car? Didn't catch its number though!

Neither have I, but in some parts of England, 3-car 158s and 2-car 170s are the norm.

According to NRE, they do now. This must be s recent thing because when I was last in Edinburgh (when Bittern was there), they were going to Bathgate.

Indeed, Scotland's 158 and 170 fleets are the opposite of what there is in the area I'm in: Quite a lot of the 170s are 2 car units, and 3 car 158s are a pretty common sight. There's nothing bizarre about a 3 car 158, although I would say that, having been acquainted with them on a daily basis for the better part of my life. Coming from the north east originally, one of the strangest things for me when I moved further south was 3 and 4 car trains, and with doors not at the ends of the carriages! :-?

Anyway, I'll leave this thread be now after that brief tangent.

170 395 ex Hull set. Middle car is goosed. Previously 402 and 432 have been 2cars. can they not tie up 158 coach to a 156 coach and run it about as a hybrid?

Yes, it's been done before, though not for a long time AFAIK. Image

Are there any routes where adding the currently spare 156 car onto another one to make a 3 car unit would be useful?

what about adding it to a RETB fitted unit and sending it up the west highland as a 3-car set instead of a 4 car set on a less busy run although as we are now in summer i guess all services will be getting busier and may need the fourth car. Was it the toilet or bike rack end that came off the track im not sure which is numbered 52 and 57, just for curiosity.

The last 156 [156504] remains in Strathclyde livery. 156506 is in the Glasgow workshop. 156504 due in in mid August - last photographs anyone?

So what services was the 170 doing out of Glasgow Central ?

Working to and from edinburgh on the Shotts line as its a 2 car at the moment its not a problem. Its very rare to see a turbo at central, usually only diversions or specials

To add an extra coach on the end of another 2 coach train is not easy because the gangways are different sizes, requiring an adapter plate, and also some rewiring is necessary on the jumper cables as you will be connecting an inner end to an outer end I believe.

I think they substitute 158s on the express service, but as there's plenty of 158s to go around (and even more after A-B) I doubt we'll be seeing much of anything else on that service. I've only ever seen something other than a 158 on it once, actually, and that was a 156.

I wouldn't have thought 3 car ones would have any issues either, because of the couple of journies a day with 322s.

Yes, they have been for many years too, only for Edinburgh crews though. The expresses can be any unit in either direction, a 156 for the 0658 GLC-EDB springs to mind, though you are generally correct.

I ve worked a 6car 170 to central (non stop) during diversions. Also there were a couple of 170s on Edin to Holytown services during the engineering works last week. 2 car 170 395 was defo on that line as was 170 458 i think.

My apologies missed that- a quick scan implied the thread had gone off topic. I will be excited to see the 334s in the new livery...
