Forgot about about the extra /4s SPT had - I'd counted just the /5s. *Hits head*.

Yes. It was announced in late November by Scotrail, as part of the Airdrie-Bathgate opening cascades.

Link

The 380s are coming to run all Inverclyde and Ayrshire services, meaning that all 334s, 318s and 320s will be running on services through Partick. North Berwick's also getting the new trains, to allow the 322s to go back down South.

What are the plans for the new units? Class 334s will be diagrammed to exclusively operate services via Airdrie and Bathgate (Milngavie and Helensburgh-Edinburgh) with 318s operating on the Argyle route. The 320s are to supplement the North Clyde diagrams, but will not be running beyond Airdrie, and 8 units will be diagrammed onto the Argyle Line.

This raises some questions:
  • How will the Argyle Line be equipped for Class 320 operation? DOO equipment, including mirrors and cameras, needs to be fitted at various stages across the line. An alternative would be to simply attach 320s to the back of Hamilton Circle service, although this would be restrictive and totally moronic.
  • Will the 75mph 320s be able to operate to Lanark and through Cambuslang at the current timings? These sections of line are faster than the 320s' maximum speed.

With 8 units out of the 22 set to go to Argyle, that leaves 14 for North Clyde services; quite a lot considering that "only" 4 would be needed for a Dalmuir-Springburn service. You'd have another 10 floating around. This is more than enough to operate a Balloch-Airdrie service on top of the Airdrie-Bathgate services (ie, doing what currently happens in the evening peaks, but throughout the day). The stock is available for this, but it's purely speculation on my part otherwise. They could simply choose to run Balloch services to High Street, for example (although I do think maintaining this terminating at High Street charade would be rather foolish).

Whatever happens, you will get 8x320s about this time next year. You have my deepest condolences.

The 320 fleet is to be upgraded to allow it's speed to be increased.

Hi there, I think I read elsewhere (scot-rail forum) that the 320's could run through the Argyle line section. I dunno if that means additional equipment has recently been installed on platforms for them. (Could well be wrong)

I use the 320's now and again and i don't think they're that bad.

Another thing I noticed was in the current RAIL magazine that on repaint the middle car in the EMU's would have Gaelic branding for Scotrail, but I'm guessing that's the 'scotland's railways' strapline.

I'm on the nearly every day and can't stand them! But I'll spare you a rant...

The 320s can run through Glasgow Central Low Level on ECS or attached to the rear of 318s. But they can't go on their own for passenger operation because there's no DOO equipment. This is OK for 318s (where the driver can look back) or 334s (which have bodyside CCTV) but the 320 drivers cannot look back because of the driving position. All that's needed is the appropriate CCTV or mirrors, so I'm surprised that they've not already been installed to allow a bit more flexibility with the units.

At least you still get the 318s, though. And the 334s are the best units available for going right through to Edinburgh.

318s are the better of the two anyway. XD

Alright, where are the 318s? I've been using the Argyle Line every day it's been opened his week and have hardly seen any. In fact, I've not seen any since Christmas Eve, and there was only one in operaion on the line (318 260) while two were on Central high level services and one in Motherwell's sidings. Yesterday and today, the only trains on the Argyle Line I've seen have been 334s!

ScotRail have been experiencing major problems with the 334s on the Ayrshire/Inverclyde routes resulting in the 318s being shifted to operate these services and the 334s onto the North Clyde and Argyle Services.

334's are having their rheostatic brakes isolated due to current weather conditions, and must run as 6 cars until further notice.
This can't be correct. I've seen many 334s today and they wre only one unit (3 cars) each.

Many 334s on Cathcart Circle services today. 318 254 and 314 211 are all alone in their respective classes on the circle. Quite strange.

Earlier on in the week you would have seen trusty 314's running up and down the ayrshire routes due to their higher reliability in the snow. Also ran a few 4 car sprinters after nothing had ran for hours last week.

Yes, though they don't suck snow into their traction motors and can more or less run in the current weather. Funny how these older units generally come to the fore in times like this. It should be the other way round!

The 314 traction motor set-up means that they pull air in for cooling through the 4 sides of the traction motor. If the one facing the direction of travel is blocked there are 3 other points in which to draw air. The traction packages do not also have cooling fans that force air into the electronics and so does not cause itself problems.

The 334 fleet forces air through the traction electronics by a fan that is often facing the direction of travel, these force the snow through or block the cooling altogether. The melting snow then causes spurious readings in the traction electronics diagnostics, ultimately stopping the train as the traction package does not like what it sees.

I have also heard that the 320 fleet is to be fitted with toilets.

News. Northern Rail 156 448 was operating a GLC - Newcastle service today as the ScotRail unit which was supposed to work this got caught behind a bridge strike near Carlisle. I spotted 448 at Pollokshields (I was on a passing 314)
