Using agency staff means they get staff on the cheap...they only have to pay the living wage, no pension, no holiday pay and no sick pay! It's a poor decision really as it will keep plenty of people in poor pay with little or no employee rights. Something our esteemed idiots in Holyrood are against but strangely allow Abellio to do.

And receive second rate quality in return.
Except they asked half the cleaning staff and 80 fitters to take voluntary redundancy. Increase DOO. Have been late with payroll deductions for 3 months. Failed to make credit union contributions. If there was one good thing about First it was they took almost all staff in house and gave proper contracts, pensions, sick.pay etc. As Abellio cannot operate with half the cleaning staff and 80 less fitters we can only assume they want to go back to agency employment. That is bad news for everyone.
They are looking for all redundancies to come through the voluntary leavers scheme where an employee is offered 70% salary as a lump sum. They assure us that there will be no compulsory redundancies. Now call me cynical but I'm not so sure about that. I cannot see people jumping at this offer and in turn this will force the hand of Abellio to look at how they can get rid of staff.
The next few months will be an interesting (or worrying) time for engineering staff.
