ScotRail 156 at Newcastle?

Went down to Newcastle for the day and have seen a ScotRail 156 at Newcastle Central station. I can't see any timetabled Glasgow-Newcastle services so what was it doing there?

A 156 stables overnight at Newcastle off of the 1613 from Glasgow to Newcastle. This forms the first Newcastle - Glasgow in the morning.

If I remember correctly, a 156 is also given to Northern to operate some of their local services. This is off a morning train from Dumfries and goes back to form a ScotRail service from Carlisle later that evening.

Yes, scotrail crews only know to Carlisle.
There are also Northern crews who work some Dumfries to Carlisle services

Yes, it used to be a Newcastle to Stranraer boat train.

THe Carlisle - Dumfries service was much improved a few years ago though, in terms of frequency.

I seem to remember at one stage there have been explanations that PIS displays and sites such as RTT were not able to reflect the change of operating TOC either side of Carlisle, so an eastbound through train across Carlisle would stay showing as Scotrail until Newcastle, and on its return it would be Northern all the way to its destination. Irrespective of who was crewing it on a particular leg of the journey, which can be different to the responsible TOC.

I think that’s still the case, at least on RTT, tomorrow there are 3 Scotrail arrivals at Newcastle, but no departures.

I will take a look when back in tomorrow but from memory it is a Scotrail service to Newcastle and a Northern service from Newcastle. The system doesn't (or didn't) enable you to change the TOC code but various behind the scenes info is changed at Carlisle in both direction to ensure the right TOC is billed correctly when it comes to track access charges.

Yes, and in the north east of England - partly to these reciprocal arrangements probably.

Hasn't done that for quite a while (at least since December 2019, but I'm sure it was the timetable change in May last year that saw it off). None of the units venture off the Tyne Valley now

The Scotrail units that Northern see through the day are

CK265 1E97 16:13 Glasgow Central - Newcastle (20:07) which then overnights at Heaton (5E97). The next day this forms....
CK277 1N50 06:20 Newcastle to Carlisle which after changing headcode (1L50) goes to Glasgow (not advertised as through train)

The other set is CK272 which is 1N56 07:41 Dumfries to Newcastle which sits at Newcastle from 09:54 until 17:23 before working 2N27 to Carlisle which then forms 1L73 19:20 Carlisle to Glasgow (again not advertised through service)

Could it have been the 0618 from Dumfries?

2N10 06:18 Dumfries to Newcastle is a Northern unit (HT663), another Northern unit works the 07:14 from Dumfries to Newcastle as 2L73 / 2N16 (split headcode at Carlisle)
