What a fiasco this morning, waited over an hour at my local station (8 trains per hour supposedly), 6 of them cancelled shown as cancelled, 1 just disappeared from the board and another kept getting put back by 15 minutes all the time. Eventually just went home, thought my fingers were going to fall off, day off for me!

Would be interested to know how this level of snow and temperatures affect say French and German rail services. What annoys me is the arse covering negativity of the continual announcements to find "alternative travel arrangements" etc etc instead of positive stuff like "we'll do our best to keep trains running", "staff doing their best in difficult conditions" etc.
Is it maybe time to review rail expansion? Whats the point of a system that cannot be relied on in moderately severe conditions?
In particular the Borders rail line should be looked at , whats the point of a railway which at worst will be closed most of the time from November to March! Or at best so unreliable as to make commuting impossible during these months.
It now looks like we're going into a cold cycle much like what happened in the 1940s, the early 60s and to a lesser extent in the early 80s. So we really have to sort this out or just accept the railways are just a fair weather luxury and the real transport system is cars and buses on the roads.

Does anyone know if Scotrail will accept East Coat advance tickets from Aberdeen-Edinburgh this week? Thanks.

Have looked at the EC website and it doesn't really make it clear!

Unless it says so, then no. Try phoning ScotRail or East Coast and asking them - they might be able to arrange something.

East Coast aren't running north of Edinburgh today, but I can't see info on ticket validity on Scotrail either! Might change later on in the week, when are you due to travel?

Will try again on the phone later today. Surely this is the sort of info they should put on their website (either way) as it would save them answering a lot of calls?

Well, given that EC tickets are never valid on ScotRail in normal circumstances (except in case of cancellations where you miss your train) it's taken as a given. The fact is that some EC services to Aberdeen are running, if yours is one of them then you'll have to use it unless you'll miss it because of another company's delays making you late.

I don't know where you are getting this info from, but National Rail says:

NAtional Rail said:
There are no services going to or from Inverness or Aberdeen today. All services will be terminating at Edinburgh. Passengers are advised not to attempt to travel to destinations north of Edinburgh. There is no onward transport beyond Edinburgh

This is for East Coast services today. More info about tomorrow's/Friday's/weekend services later on.

That makes sense! Thought you may have some sort of local knowledge that I wouldn't know.

Best advice to the person with the advance ticket - check to see whether East Coast are running north of Edinburgh on whatever date the ticket says, phone up to check and then ask at the station when you get there.

Yes, they will if EC are not running during these special measures and if ScotRail are, . . . . or until this :

Waverley-Inverness supposed to have a signal failure according to Red Button. What are the chances of the Saturday morning Caley Sleeper getting through?

Agreed.

The fact that there are still trains running, despite many motorways and main roads being closed (the two roads from Sheffield to Manchester are closed, for example, almost all schools are closed, almost all buses are off) should be priased - hats off to the staff working. This is when people are tested and deserve praise.

I just wish the public could accept good news about the railways!

It is perfectly reasonable to say "don't travel if you don't have to".

As First Scotrail (the forum member, that is) has now posted, all North Clyde services are suspended and a limited Argyle Line service is in operation. If you're in Glasgow, get home ASAP

In all fairness, things were a lot better this morning, but it's going to be chaos this evening if North Clyde services remain cancelled (which I think they will).

The staff at Stirling were advising people to board the ScotRail services to Edinburgh as East Coast services had been cancelled.

North clyde running minimal timetable with helensburgh ONLY being served. train shuttle to balloch from dumbarton. Expect services to be very busy this evening.

I think they suspended services so staff could return, get units in place for evening rush.

Odd.
They were going all the way to Dunblane earlier on, and there's not been that much snow since then here.

Scotrail's site is now disrupted by heavy traffic.

In addition to the above, trains are no NOT stopping at Bellshill due to a signalling problem. Services via Paisley Gilmour Street are also facing disruption.

Seems be be conflicting info on the journeycheck site:

Please note that due to signalling problems caused by poor weather conditions, services Queen Street - Dunblane services have been withdrawn and services from Edinburgh to Dunblane will operate on an hourly basis and will run to/from Dunblane departing Edinburgh xx33 from 0633 and xx58 from Dunblane from 0758 . Replacement buses operate between Dunblane and Stirling calling at Bridge of Allan.

Even road transport is a mess. East Kilbride Bus station was practically empty at 15:00. Might have to use the EK line tomorrow.

EK services have stood out particularly well this week, and have almost all ran with the exception of Sunday. Whifflet is knackered, it seen ONE train today, and it only went as far as Langloan junction, and turned back. I heard earlier that buses were struggling to get to EK also.

EK is surprisingly good. I'd have thought that they would be one of the first to go down.

Whifflet is bad, but there are plenty of alternatives by going on the North Clyde/Argyle line where appropriate so it's not too catastrophic. Whifflet passengers can go to Sunnyside, Kirkwood to Blairhill, Carmyle to Cambuslang etc etc.

I think the North Clydes are down to half hourly this evening. That will undoubtedly be... an experience.

The Ballochs and expresses are all cancelled. The ones from Helensburgh to Airdrie are usually three carriages (and often don't need to be any longer, because the expresses run five minutes before them), so hopefully will be 6. Still, that's going to be less than a third of the normal capacity...

So next option is 455 from troon at about 440ish an empty 334 passes 10 mins later i assume same 334 flies past troon looking about 20 % full. Train arrived 10mins late which aint bad however it proceeded to stop at barassie where its not scheduled to ! Angry aint the word no information whatsoever
