IIRC, there used to be four lines from Pendleton Broad Street [the Brindle Heath flyover provided the fast lines] paired by use, and the lines to/from Bolton trailed into/diverged from these just west of today's Salford Crescent. Then the four lines continued round the bend through Salford to Manchester Victoria.
Looking at an old OS map, I can't see any flyover. There were 4 lines through the old station, two splitting left at Brindle Heath towards Swinton the other two going right towards Agecroft. These met the current Bolton lines there. The Bolton line had a stop at Pendleton station, across the road from Pendleton Broad Street.

Anybody heard when it's going to be repaired?

Pete

Not sure but as with the M62 disruption because of the roadworks, it seems to have now become a recurring theme every morning on the traffic news on the radio reporting that only limited services can call at Salford Central due to ongoing engineering works. They clearly don't know how ongoing or that engineering works mean missing track! :D

The rumour im the mess room is that the new diamond crossover was found with a ruddy great big crack in it. Worst of all it came all the way from Romania where another will have to be re-ordered. April has be brandished as the new completion time. Not good if true.

In the good old days new rails came from Workington

With respect to snail, we're going back to the 1960's now!

Pendleton Broad St station consisted of two island platforms - the island on the left when leaving Manchester served the lines which then went back under Brindle Heath flyover to Agecroft and Clifton Junction on the way to Bolton. The island on the right served the fast lines to Wigan via Atherton. These rose over the Agecroft lines via the Brindle Heath flyover, on their way to Irlams O' Th' Height.

I travelled this way several times in my youth, and there is actually a photograph including Brindle Heath flyover on p.105 of Bob Pixton's book "Liverpool & Manchester- The Lancashire & Yorkshire Lines" showing the site in 1962, with a stopping train about to pass under the flyover.

I suspect the flyover was closed and demolished shortly afterwards, long before the "old" OS map was published.

Respect accepted :) Clearly there is old and there is older! It does seem odd though to operate that way round and have tracks cross, but I had forgotten about the 4-track layout on the Wigan line. When did the Wigan platforms stop being used?

No, that's the one at Windsor Bridge just before Salford Crescent station. The offending crossover is between Victoria and Salford Central.

And in my case, there's ancient!

Looking again at Pixton's book, I see he includes photos from the 1950s of the stations on the Wigan route, and his photos and a relevant caption reveal that only Pendleton Broad St and Atherton Central had platforms on the fast lines.

The L&Y opened its direct Manchester to Wigan line from Windsor Bridge Junction to Crow Nest Junction in 1888, to avoid congestion in the Bolton area. Presumably having the fast lines where they were, although necessitating the need of the Brindle Heath flyover, meant fewer conflicting movements for traffic from Manchester Victoria at Windsor Bridge and at Dobbs Brow Junction on its way to Hindley & Wigan.

Interestingly, Wikki claims the fast Wigan lines were taken out of use on 21st November 1965, so it could also be then that the Brindle Heath flyover was closed.

'Inox' is correct - the first post in this thread, and photos posted since, confirms that the plain-lined crossing is at Windsor Bridge South Jn.

The wording on this is a little misleading though...

Due to emergency engineering work, the route from Salford Central and Salford Crescent towards Bolton/Wigan from Manchester will be blocked until further notice.

To me that reads that the line from Salford Crescent to Bolton is blocked which is also enforced by this one

Services from Manchester Victoria towards Wigan Wallgate / Southport / Clitheroe and Kirkby will travel via Ordsall Lane directly to Salford Crescent and will not call at Salford Central.

Which could in the eyes of the general public suggest that while the Bolton line is blocked the trains will still continue by avoiding the blocked line.

I know what they are getting at, just the wording - specifically in the first quote.

I've just been into manc today and went past the diamond in question and nothing looks to have been done - is the work scheduled for all day tomorrow?

Could well be. When there was the broken crossover at Buckland Junction near Dover last year, all of the delay was waiting for the new part to be sourced - they actually fit it with a single weekend possession.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
What seemed to be a valid reason for some trackwork rationalization between Salford Central staion and Manchester Victoria station at the time this was carried out would not have the same relevance todays with the Ordsall Chord project due to come live in the not too distant future. Will there be any re-thinking of the trackwork operational requirements in this interim period or it is felt that the track layout as existing will be able to cope ?

Just one of my typical "Sunday morning" musings. Anyone with any thoughts on this matter ?
