The USSR perhaps made the same mistakes that the UK made in drawing lines on maps that didn't take into account the people who lived there
To swing back to the Russia-Ukraine issue, this is exactly the problem with Crimea. It's actually fair and reasonable to say that the USSR should never have put Crimea in the Ukrainian SSR, because it simply didn't belong there ethnically and linguistically. The Donbas on the other hand is undeniably Ukrainian, with the situation prior to 2014 being the result of what we would now call ethnic cleansing.
I bet part of the reasons the Russian army seem to be getting so demoralised is that they are ending up being attacked with the same kit they were using against them only recently.
For sure. It's now becoming clear that Ukraine is hitting Russian forces constantly, and they are quite content to play a waiting game by simply attacking Russian forces constantly until an opportunity presents itself.
The big question today regards Lyman. The Ukrainians appear not to have the strength to take Lyman, and their attacks so far are being repelled. There is a question here as to whether Ukraine is genuinely trying to take Lyman, or whether it's yet another big bluff which is concealing something else. Some commentators suggest that Ukraine is content to sit and wait with Lyman, because they're able to prevent Russia from resupplying the Russian forces inside Lyman anyway.
On the other hand, Bakhmut is apparently coming under severe pressure from the Russian side. It's not as big a deal as it was two weeks ago, but it would still be a big loss.
The other ridiculous thing: it seems confirmed now that Russia is looking for soldiers among prisoners. What do they really think is going to happen if they start sending criminals into their war machine? I cannot see them doing anything other than immediately deserting, especially if Ukraine offers them amnesty for doing so.
