A question on railway history, but was there a "Rule Book" before the railways were nationalised?
Obviously there has been a standard set of rules for operational staff (Drivers, signallers, shunter, guards, platform staff and others) to follow for many years, but what did this look like before nationalisation?
Did each company have their own Rule Book, did staff who crossed over company boundaries (Long distance drivers for example) have to learn different rules depending on their location?
