RPSI "Mystery Excursion" 23rd July

Just says 'diesel' on the RPSI website, which worries me that it might be a 201, a bit like a failure to specify traction here is a shamefaced tacit admission that a 47 is likely. Can't make it anyway, but am still planning the do on 9th September, which looks hellfire!

These days there are more 201s tied up an regular duties than 071s, so it's a fairly safe bet - it would probably be harder to get a 201. The main target market for this trip is the general public, who wouldn't normally be interested in a diesel trip but the "Mystery Train" has a certain novelty to it - CIÉ used to run them back in the 60s (did BR ever do something similar?).

Oi Oi! I know where not going to agree on liking the 47s here :lol:

I think one of the slightly dissapointing way that Irish tours seem to be orginised these days is how short notice theyre becomming!

Sure, id love to do the mystery trip with the 071s :) or 141s :D But with only 3 weeks to a months notice, unfortunatly i just cant make such a tour!:(

Maybe its just me? But normally, when a tour like this comes up...id love at least 3 months notice to look at booking flights etc...Looks interesting though! :)

Granted it is short notice, this is down to the fact that the RPSI only received an operating license for the IÉ network (required since January under EU law) last Friday, so was unable to confirm any operations until the last few days.

Anyone interested in an Irish diesel trip should keep Friday 9th September free in their diaries.

Only times nowadays when I see tours with traction not specified, its always been a group using DB as the TOC. So 99.9% of the time, it means it'll be a 66 or 67. Rail Blue being one of the worst for not specifying the traction beforehand. Most other groups advertise somewhere along the lines the expected traction or the TOC. If the TOC is WCRC, then its a safe bet it'll be a 47, unless specified otherwise.
Anyway, its good to see your jealousy of the 47s isnt going away.

Sounds good this tour in Ireland. Shame i cant make it.

By '47' I also include its spiritual descendent, the 67.

Shame about the short notice, but that's fair enough given the new requirement. Can't make it either, seriously doubt I'll be able to do the one on the 9th of September either, as I've already got the following Friday off and don't see it being likely I'd get the 9th off too. Then there's not finishing work until 2000 the day before and having to work on the 10th. Not too likely to happen sadly, which is annoying as the route looks excellent! Maybe next year!

BR used to do mystery tours until at least the 1970's / early 1980's. Ceased as loco hauled stock mostly disappeared with the spread of Sprinters. Mystexes & Adexes at weekend used stock that was mainly used on Mondays to Fridays, but was spare at weekends (except in summer, when it would be used on SO services to/from holiday resorts.).

Anyway, descendant? 67s are nothing like a 47. Just because 67s replaced 47s off of the mail traffic. By that anylysis, 47s must be the spiritual descendants of all these locos you loved. Obviously you wont like that, but it makes as much sense as what you said.
67s are are poorly built and poorly designed locos that struggle to find work, and are restricted with what they can do.
47s are a versatile sturdy workhorse, that even now still have just as many locos in traffic as the 67s have. In their day they were 500 strong, and were at home on virtually any type of train.

The 67s are quite clearly a poor mans loco. Designed with one thing in mind, and struggles to do even that.
The 47 and 67 are miles apart, even if the 67s were built to replace the last of the 47s.

Anyway, as you seem to include 67 when you mention 47, from now on, when I say a class, you will have absolutely no idea what loco im on about. I may say 47, but i may mean 26. Or I may mean 46.

Anyway, dont be ashamed of your jealousy. At least deep down you know 47s are the best, even if you cant come out and say it.

I've just sent my booking off for this and I e-mailed the RPSi before doing so and they are expecting it to be hauled by 2 x 071. I guess that won't mean double headed 071's but 2 seperate ones at some point in the day.

080 Dublin Connolly-Kilkenny
076 Kilkenny-Dublin Connolly

Carriages used were RPSI 3185+1505+1523+1541+1522+1514.

Here here! And of course thanks to all those who toiled away on the RPSI safety sub-committee to get the operating license, with whom we'd probably never have any loco hauled passenger trains in the Irish Republic again.

Where do 141/142 stand with this operating license?
Any chance of a tour (with suitable notice!) with them, next year maybe?

I believe the Diesel Dept. is still in the process of being set up, so it might be a while yet. The 9/9/11 tour will be an IÉ 071 and the Cravens.

But don't worry, it will work out in time, it's also planned to preserve 121 class single cab No.134. I believe the Whitehead lads currently use B142 for shunting at the moment, so there is at least one active semi-regularly.
