That usually means using the ferry between those points, although the ferry is not included in the fare.

That routeing is attached to a limited number of flows between stations in Essex and stations in Kent, using the ferry to avoid having to travel via London - but with the passenger having to pay separately for the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry.

Bearing in mind the ferry charge is extra and the bus from Riverside to the Town at Tilbury is free, these fares seem to be based on a journey via London, so you win hands down on split tickets.

They'd have to let you travel via London in that case.

There was a time when these tickets were unintentionally valid via London; a few people got threatened with removal from the train, despite holding a valid itinerary.

There's still nothing in the condensed routeing which excludes the possibility of going via London, and so if that's all you're shown when buying, you'd be entitled to go via London if that's normally a permitted route, provided you also go via Gravesend and Tilbury.

The expanded routeing does state you have to use the ferry though, which is pretty clear.

Still a useful route to make use of even if you have no intention of crossing the river. It has an entry in my list of inconspicuous tickets which offer better value than intended.

If a route via London is not allowable then what are you paying £20.30 fro a Gravesend to Tilbury Town ticket when you walk from Gravesend Station to the ferry, pay the ferry fee and then use the FREE bus from Tilbury Riverside to Tilbury Town.

I have no idea where anyone is getting £20.30 from. The TILBRY&GRAVESND routed tickets are only available for journeys which have a certain amount of rail travel at either end, so they don't exist for Gravesend to Tilbury. The last time I checked the cheapest TILBRY&GRAVESND ticket was Higham to Stanford-le-Hope at £12.20 for an SDR, which is half decent.
