Hence why I left the RMT

This is getting ridiculous
It is. The total lack of awareness is quite simply stunning. The Gvmnt will be absolutely rubbing their hands in glee at the impending implosion of the RMT's membership.

The government seem quite happy to wait it out. It's been 6 months now.

Folk will find another way and they won't come back.

That's been said before and throughout this dispute, seems to be wishful thinking so far.

Hasn't that also supposed to have happened already...?

They've been striking since July and still haven't got a result so one more won't hurt, clearly...

This is going too far now.

We can presume you're comfortably in the "I can afford it, thanks" category then? Plenty aren't!

Looks like I'm onto unpaid leave now. Great Northern have engineering work planned most weekends for the next 6 weeks too. Heaven knows how we'll run our service, we're already short of staff (not railway staff, a commuter).

This will serve only to polarise the workforce, between those fortunate enough to be able to afford to hemorrhage money right on top of Christmas, and those who can't. The RMT leadership has just departed the real world. Very possibly the beginning of the end for them I would think.
They departed the real world when Lynch encouraged RMT members to back Brexit (even though the one being pursued was not a left-wing style Brexit).

Forgive me for being naiive, did the union put this exact strike proposal to members for ballot? If so that means a majority approved the more controversial overtime ban, if not then the RMT executive have been stupid.

ASLEF will no doubt pick up the dates between Christmas and New Year. Can imagine 23/24/30/31 Dec being some.

It's absolutely imperative I get from Glasgow to London on Saturday 17th Dec. Looks like it's back to easyJet before like minded people push the plane ticket price up....

i doubt that, most staff hate working the Christmas period as its usually full of drunken d@@kheads but hopefully will bring an offer to the table. Also i don't think you get the level of anger among rail staff, strikes were called off due to being told there would be an offer made. Lets face it the only reason the strikes have not been sorted out by now is that the tory government had knackered the economy and are using the culture wars and union baron routine to bash labour as they have nothing else left, notice when Liz crashed the economy suddenly the papers and news were non stop talking about people on boats as a distraction to talking about the economy.
This isn't the immediate "Christmas period", it's mid December and early January. A rather expensive time in which many staff simply cannot afford their January pay to be missing a very large chunk. The anger is irrelevant if the Gvmnt are happy to sit back and watch the strikers slit their own throats, and I see nothing to indicate that they have any intention of doing differently?

Very nice, simple journey if you fly to Gatwick. I did it for the first time in place of the train last year and had a very easy experience, apart from Glasgow Airport being very boring with little shops.

They will be the ones that give the impetus to legal changes to give a minimum service level.

Indeed, it's just putting a lot of pressure on it's members like myself who are now having to plan to lose 6 day's pay across Jan/Feb pay. There will be some who decide this is just too much to lose
Presumably the 91.6% who voted to continue with strikes were fully aware of the implications and took this into account when choosing which way to vote. People can't really vote for continued strike action then be surprised when the Union leadership calls a strike... or can they? :s

No doubt the 13-18 action will be called off at 6pm on the 12th December
Unless there is genuine contact telling the unions negotiations for an offer can proceed that day, I don't see them getting away with that trick again.

I'm guessing the Union and many members who voted for it are hoping the Govt blink first and the action doesn't actually happen in the end. If they follow through on the action and are then deprived of all that pay then I can see further strike ballots being unsupportive of further action.

At a guess, many were quite probably lulled into a sense of security by the hitherto quite measured and careful action taken so far. The leadership have now thrown caution to the wind and upped the stakes massively.

Oh course they did, 2 boxes on each ballot. 91% said yes to strikes, even more said yes to action short of a strike, i.e. RDW ban. Hardly controversial to just work your contracted hours, as Avanti found out in the summer!

Either / or is fairly sustainable. Both at the same time, not so much.

Stop yapping on here n get booking then!
Yes too right! Got flights from Edinburgh for not to much additional outlay.

Indeed, Glasgow airport is refreshingly small and easy to get to compared to London's airports.

Paitence and solidarity and all that evaporates very quickly when your important travel plans are scuppered leaving you out of pocket too...

The 91% who voted to strike are more than happy to do so as that's what I and they voted for. 8 dates within a 4 week period is considerably more than has been up to this point and is more than people would conceivably planned for

Agreed, doing both is a real hammer to members. But hopefully it will force a hand somewhere

And that was the big problem. Parliament was more or less shut for summer recess, and there wasn't really a PM either. The earliest any strikes should have been called was after September 5th when the new PM was appointed.

Big mistake for RMT in my view

Not hurrah... I'm due to travel from Penrith to Reading via Euston on 15th and back on 18th... what are the chances do you think?
