If a business is a rip-roaring success, making huge profits from customers delighted to pay the price charged for, and fully satisfied with, their product, then of course the staff should share in that success and be rewarded accordingly. Unfortunately that is not the case for the railway. Having said that, rail staff are entitled to ask for a pay rise, just like anyone else, but their demands have to be realistic. And the Unions should remember that even the threat of a strike, never mind actually going on strike, is enough to turn people away from the railway and onto other forms of transport. That is the last thing the rail industry needs, at any time, but even more so now.
