I am travelling to Germany from the UK
for 3 weeks at the end of July into August.
I was going to do some line-siding on the right side of the Rhine Valley but recently found out from a local that from July 10th the whole of that side is closed for upgrade work, track signalling etc.
That being the case I was wondering if anybody knows which routes all the freight traffic using that side would be diverted by.
Any help would be gratefully received

The obvious route, if paths can be found, is the left bank, otherwise via Giessen-Siegen is the nearest alternative. Our German members will know more.

When it happened before just went down the other side. We were staying in a hotel next to the line and it was one freight after another.

Thanks for the information guys but..
On looking further into this apparently from June until December the whole of Koblenz station is closed with all arrivals and departures being buses.
How would this affect the possible use of left bank operations.
Any further help gratefully received.

Is it? Just looked at a trip using DB website and says up to Remagen ok but closed from there?

There are two different disruptions on that line:
* This one in June and July
* This one from July till December

Both seem to result in less traffic than usual, but there will be trains running.

The left bank via Koblenz will be open and one of the main reroutings. There are some replacement buses on the left bank as well though, since some small-stop RB trains will be cancelled in favour of rerouted traffic.

One other main route for diversion is via Gießen, this can be inferred from the fact there are small stops without service there as well.

Normally some trains would be heading from Siegen to the north via Finnentrop - Hagen, but on that route crumbling bridges mean that heavy trains are prohibited from using it (the IC double-decker trains there have been permanently cancelled for the same reason). So probably few trains there, instead they'd go from Siegen to Cologne.
