I might have this wrong but I think the Caledonian Sleepers to Inverness / Aberdeen / Fort William reverse out of Edinburgh.

On the way north on Sunday nights they sometimes head up the ECML. To do this they depart Euston and then reverse back south to head across to the east cost.

They reverse in Wembley yard then they go onto the ECML via the NLL.

Birimingham New Street - Walsall to Birmingham international services
Birmingham New Street - anything coming of the Camp Hill route needs to reverse for Derby (this only useally happens if the trains delayed)

ATW Cardiff - North Wales services go via Gobowen, Chirk, Ruabon and Wrexham, and so reverse out of Chester.

 No Passenger trains reverse for Alloa (without the H! ;)) but it would certainly be possible if required in the future if FSR wanted to run services from Alloa to the North. (Perth and maybe beyond...). At the moment, I don't see that there would be much demand for that, however.

There are no plans for services reversing at Stirling to/from Alloa
At the moment the Glasgow - Stirling services have been extended to Alloa
From next year this will be joined by some of the Edinburgh - Dunblane services running to Alloa instead of Dunblane, giving a half-hourly service on the route
Again, no reversing of journeys at Stirling required

When the SuperSprinters (Class 156 units) were introduced there used to be some other strange passenger services, which required reversal en-route :
Stranraer - Glasgow Central - Edinburgh Waverley
Edinburgh Waverley - Glasgow Queen Street - Oban / Fort William

Prior to sprinters :
Glasgow Queen Street - Cumbernauld which included reversal at Eastfield depot
I remember once the Class 107 unit had to go through the entire depot due to a failed signal

Currently on a FGW HST diverted by engineering works, which has reversed twice, both at Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads

It is interesting that of the reversals mentioned (apart from the Caledonian sleepers when diverted via the ECML) happen at a station which is a booked stop for the train on its regular route in normal service. I was wondering if anyone knows of any current examples where this would happen en route when a train is on its normal route and not at a station call.

The only instance I can think of ended in the early 1980s when the Huddersfield-Penistone-Sheffield DMU (before it ran via Barnsley) reversed after passing through the remains of Sheffield Victoria station in order join the line down to Sheffield Midland.

The only time I have been on a train that had to reverse during the course of its journey outside of a station was when I was on an Aberdeen-Edinburgh Scotrail service a few years ago. A fault developed in the instruments in the cab and the unit had to be turned on the triangular junction with the Dunfermline line south of Markinch so that the train could be driven from what was the back cab.

Not true, previously mentioned, most Liskeard- Looe trains reverse on the junction with only two each direction a day continuing to the station.

The nearest to that is the Liskeard to Looe line, which leaves Liskeard by travelling steadily downhill, in a circle, then reverses at Coombe Junction halt. This is basically a station in name only. I think its officially the least used station on the network by far (something like half a dozen passengers per year). it only really exists because the train HAS to reverse there

lol. i started typing before the above post! he knows better than I do!

It exists because they can't close it.

Only two trains a day reverse there, all others reverse at the junction itself without running into the station.
Last figures released had Coombe Junction Halt at 35 passenger uses, not the least.

I've had that too on a GNER service to Aberdeen. The leading power car had developed an AWS fault somewhere south of Newcastle, so the HST departed the station over the High Level bridge onto the southbound ECML where it reversed back into Newcastle and continued north.

I think there must have been a driver in each cab during the manoeuvre as the reversal was quite quick, certainly quicker than it would have taken the driver to walk the length of the train.

But why? This saves only a few hundred yards, and it seems from the timetables that the services which do go to the station take a minute or so longer. How much more would it cost to actually run in?

We had a special train organised for us on the Looe Branch on Thursday evening which ran into the station one way and not the other. From what I seem to remember, the train that ran into the station had to stop three times and the one that didn't only stopped twice. Also some trains have a tight turnaround time where this may not be possible.

Ignorance, but was that the Project Rio from Midland Mainline?
If so, that stopped years ago.

Surprised no one's yet pointed out the Nottingham - Skegness via Grantham trains, as they reverse at Grantham.

Project Rio was the 03-04 St Pancras to Manchester Piccadilly service whilst there was modernisation on the WCML.

Originally its calling pattern was Luton, Wellingborough, Kettering, Market Harborough, Leicester, Stockport, and Manchester Piccadilly.

Later, the calling pattern was amended to run fast Leicester to Manchester - I'm assuming due to works at Stockport more than anything else.
