Hi all.
Today, I went to my local train station to get the train into town. As always, I went to the ticket office and asked for an "Adult return to Lime Street, please", whilst showing him my 16-25 railcard.

The guy looked at my rail card and asked me what time I was travelling back, I asked why, and he replied saying that because of peak-times between 4pm and 6pm, I can't use discounted rail tickets between these times.

I've just looked through the Validity and Terms & Conditions section of the 16-25 railcard website and can't find any information on this matter. I have travelled back between 4pm and 6pm in the past, but from different destinations.

Can anyone confirm that this is true, or is it just the ticket man getting it wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I do not know where your local station is, I am assuming Broad Green as you mentioned that station in your last post.

Travel is not permitted on either the outward or return portion between 1601 and 1759 on the 'City Line' with a Broad Green to Liverpool Stations ticket.

As for the Railcard, the conditions will say that you are bound by whatever the ticket conditions are.

Well there's your answer. If you say what other tickets you buy then the conditions can be looked up on Avantix Traveller.

I don't think this particular restriction has anything to do with the Railcard. Off-Peak Day Singles and Returns for journeys wholly within Merseyside carry restriction Y9 which is
National Fares Manual NFM 05 CD

Generally, on Merseyside, you would never buy an Anytime ticket with a railcard - as they will cost below the minimum fare before 10am, and after 10am you would buy an off-peak ticket.

The only exception is on the 'city line' between 4pm and 6pm, when an off-peak ticket is not valid, so perhaps he has got the two restrictions confused.

(some Merseyside tickets are Y7, which doesn't have any restriction text).

I've recently travelled from Broad Green to Manchester and travelled back between 4-6pm, someone checked my ticket and nothing was said.

You are getting confused between two sets of conditions.

Firstly, you have the ticket restriction. This can make off-peak tickets invalid during certain times of the day, usually before 0930 and between 1600 and 1800, although this varies by each ticket type, location etc. Having a railcard makes no difference to these conditions, as they apply to anyone travelling on this ticket, with, or without a railcard. (Certain exceptions on Virgin trains).

Secondly, you have your railcard restriction. This is ADDITIONAL to the ticket restriction. Just because your railcard allows you to obtain discounted tickets after 10am, does not mean that you can travel at any time on those tickets.

Also, the restriction for trains between Broad Green and Manchester means you can travel anytime after 0930. (Then your railcard has the 10am restriction also). So your ticket would have been valid, hence nothing said. However, the restriction for trains between Broad Green and Liverpool means you cannot travel before 0930 AND between 1600 and 1800.

As I said earlier, each route has it's own restriction.

Right. I see now. That clears things up.
Thanks for the replies everyone :)

This is why sometimes it can be cheaper to pay to go FURTHER. Not with short distance tickets like this, but longer ones. This is often because the company setting the fare changes with the increased distance, and also it can be because of more lenient rules buying to a station that isn't a major centre or the fact that on some routes longer distance journeys are not restricted.

For example if you held a YP railcard it used to be cheaper to buy a York-Bradford ticket than a York-Leeds ticket before 1030 prior to "simplification". There are hundreds of current examples. Have a play with Avantix Traveller to find ones that are useful to you.

I dont understand why he didnt just offer the Anytime day return with 16-25 discount instead of the off peak ticket. The only restriction the railcard has is the minimum fare before 10 am so an ADR would cost you £1.65, 35p more as long as it was purchased for travel after 10am.

From Avantix traveller NFM 5 -

SDR - ANYTIME DAY R RMS
00000 - ANY PERMITTED

1 Adult @£ 1.65 = £ 1.65
__________
£ 1.65

Standard Class Return
Minimum Fare:£ 12.00

No Restriction Applies

By "discounted" I assume he meant 'Off Peak'. The ticket clerk should have worded it better and explained properly. I can only assume a railcard discounted Anytime ticket was issued? If not, then the OP needs to complain!
