Good evening, does anyone know the statuses of 58016 and 58023 as it has gone rather quiet about the two of them and I was curious as to when I may have the opportunity to ride either of them.

58016 is still at Leicester , as it has been since December 2015.Good evening, does anyone know the statuses of 58016 and 58023 as it has gone rather quiet about the two of them and I was curious as to when I may have the opportunity to ride either of them.
Heard it's not going back but also don't know where it will be going. A bit unhelpful, sorry!58023 was active/operational at the SVR back in the spring, and was at the Greatest Gathering. Not sure if it's moved back yet.
It really does seem as though the project has halted…As above 58016 still at Leicester. Went past a few week's ago when going Skegness. I'm surprised it's still here and not been moved.
58016 is still being worked on, albeit very slowly as other UKRL work is taking priority in the shed at Leicester (ie the EPR 37s, occasional DCR 60s, GBRF 47s/57s, 37003 & 27059)It really does seem as though the project has halted…
Thank you58016 is still being worked on, albeit very slowly as other UKRL work is taking priority in the shed at Leicester (ie the EPR 37s, occasional DCR 60s, GBRF 47s/57s, 37003 & 27059)
Indeed, and the Class 58 Preservation Group (58016) did have an active presence at The Greatest Gathering.58016 is still being worked on, albeit very slowly as other UKRL work is taking priority in the shed at Leicester (ie the EPR 37s, occasional DCR 60s, GBRF 47s/57s, 37003 & 27059)
Still in Spain along with the other 3. Repatriation is rumoured by the C58LG.Does 58050 still exist somewhere in Euope ? As the last loco built at Doncaster, I believe the National Railway Museum once hoped to get it.
Curious as to why DB Cargo would be reluctant given it's been sitting out of service for many years? What could they possibly gain from letting them rot on the continent?Yes still about in Spain and there are active efforts to try and repatriate it (along with the few other remaining European 58s).
The efforts, however, aren't being entirely entertained by their owners DB Cargo UK so their future remains uncertain for now
A Loco they have rotting is A loco that could possibly be making money and stealing contracts from them for a competitor of they sold it on .Curious as to why DB Cargo would be reluctant given it's been sitting out of service for many years? It wouldn't be beyond their wit to insert a clause in the sale contract to prevent competitors from having use of the locomotive would it? Just specify it's being sold on the understanding that it is for preservation and heritage purposes only and that any other use would invalidate the sale and stiff penalties would apply?A Loco they have rotting is A loco that could possibly be making money and stealing contracts from them for a competitor of they sold it on .
Db employ the same logic to keep all of their 60's and most of their 67's stored ,
quite an annoying tactic enthusiast wise but smart business wise .
All the DB 60's apart from the last 3 that were in use have appeared on the DB tender list for sale...they may have an unrealistically high reserve, thoughA Loco they have rotting is A loco that could possibly be making money and stealing contracts from them for a competitor of they sold it on .

Possibly also sitting on the balance sheet at a value that would not be achievable if sold/scrapped. So leaving them avoids a write down.It wouldn't be beyond their wit to insert a clause in the sale contract to prevent competitors from having use of the locomotive would it? But in reality 58016 has not turned a wheel since it's move from Barrow Hill. would anyone lash out thousands of Euros to transport a demic 58 from Spain to the UK, then spend thousands more (assumng parts were available) when 58016 would probably be an easier bet to restore to use.It wouldn't be beyond their wit to insert a clause in the sale contract to prevent competitors from having use of the locomotive would it? Only a guess but 58023 took a long time to get to the Severn Valley Railway and become a runner. I am guessing that that loco was the focus of the team behind the 58s. Also head a rumour the team were sourcing parts unique to 58s for 58023. It would be good to think that the owner has enough parts to run all his 58s, but that might not be an option.I must say that it’s gone rather quiet about 012 and 048 as well. The last I heard about 048 was that it started up in 2023 but nothing more. As for 012, I’ve heard nothing about it since it escaped Ron hull in 2016.
Or to think of it another way (with the mindset of my bus restoration background) - given the rarity, such locos rotting in Spain etc may well be worthwhile for parts. Im not clued up on 58s and what (if any) parts they share with other classes.would anyone lash out thousands of Euros to transport a demic 58 from Spain to the UK, then spend thousands more (assumng parts were available)
I'm sure the auditors would be interested in the (none existent) justification for not writing them down to scrap value.Possibly also sitting on the balance sheet at a value that would not be achievable if sold/scrapped. So leaving them avoids a write down.
Still in Woippy Yard, Metz as far as I know. Viewable from the D153L road that goes over the yard.Has 58044 been cut up yet?
People constantly come out with this but not only is it not supported by evidence but goes against all the available evidence. FOCs are constantly selling or leasing or short-term hiring loco's to competitors. There are too many to list but you only have to look at the current situation of Freightliner and DB hiring loco's to Colas for RHTT work to see that they are often very willing to sell/lease loco's to competitors. The real reason loco's are often left to rot is because nobody wants them.A Loco they have rotting is A loco that could possibly be making money and stealing contracts from them for a competitor of they sold it on .

Seem to remember hearing they were going to get 58023/58048 operational.I must say that it’s gone rather quiet about 012 and 048 as well. The last I heard about 048 was that it started up in 2023 but nothing more. As for 012, I’ve heard nothing about it since it escaped Ron hull in 2016.
Thanks, it seems believable that 012 is a donor because they would’ve attempted to start it up but literally nothing has happened.S

58012 I'm fairly certain was rumoured to be the spares donor loco.
