Reintegration

How difficult would it be to reintegrate some rail-connected preserved lines with the national network? If anyone ever proposed it, would it be a good idea?

I know Sheringham North Norfolk Railway reconnected themselves to the 'NN' (national network) by installing a level crossing over the road (a station each side)

There are plans for a service to go Norwich (NN) to Holt (NNR) - but I don't know what age I will be when that happens! 5 -> 10 years?!?!?!?

The west Somerset have had various plans over the years. Swanage have also plans to join the network.

I've heard of some through-ticketing schemes, the K&WVR being one, but I wish they'd take it a bit further. I'd like to see preserved lines appearing in the National Rail Timetable and on the website, also on maps. You could also have through ticketing both ways (keep a portable ticket machine hidden behind the counter in the booking office so as not to spoil the atmosphere). Perhaps the occasional TOC-worked through service as well, such as a Swanage-Waterloo commuter run, propelled by a 73 as far as the junction as well as incoming railtours and things such as the NYMR Whitby service.

I think you've misunderstood - its a stakeholder (WSR's) aspiration to run trains into Taunton, not NR's.

Sounds like the way the SDR used to run directly into Totnes rather than Riverside. Yet another use for through-ticketing, so they don't have to fence off the platform or build an extra station next to the existing one.

I believe that the Keith & Dufftown want to relay the short section between Keith Town and Keith Junction on the main line. I have no idea re timescale though

In the case of Totnes, I presume the option of a new station was infinitely preferable to running into the 'mainline' station - it still has easy connections from mainline services (which isn't the case for the WSR at their present terminus), but without the operational inflexibilities of running into the only platform available for Up trains - that must have been a huge pain, even then.
