So on a DMU how is refuelling carried out? Does the refuelling point have several nozzles at a certain distance apart so multiple tanks can be filled at once? Or must the driver keep moving the train forward for each tank? Does the driver have to identify himself or the train to the pump/s? Do the nozzles have latching handles and auto-shut off so they can be left inserted and filling unattended while the driver goes to the other nozzles?

And is this a drivers' job or a depot shunters' job? Will an average DMU (on average routes) last all day on a full tank?

Just curious as it seems to be a little-talked about subject!

The connection is with a similar sort of hose to that found on a CET point from what I've seen and when the hose is connected the operator has to set the delivery system gauge to zero and then presses the start button which fills the tank to capacity. That's then recorded.

And it depends on the length of hose at the fuel point on whether the train needs to move or not, a move which in most cases is carried out by a depot driver (if there's one), if not by the driver who brings it in, it only takes about 15-20' to fill them up depending on the speed of the equipment.

Different depots have different ways of fuelling sets. Larger depots tend to have dedicated fuelling staff i.e shunter drivers and fuel men, other depots have shunters who carry out the fuelling amongst other duties with spare drivers bringing sets to and from the fuel point. What I can tell you is that DMU's and locos are fuelled via a high speed fuel connection that is screwed on like a small steering wheel and usually capable of delivering about 2 litres per second. The normal procedure at my depot is for the set to arrive at the fuel bay stop board and then permission to proceed is given by the shunter. Sets are then fuelled with each car receiving a fuel point exam i.e levels checks, sand boxes, toilet de-tank and front end wash. The set will move off and the next set will be ready to enter. It can get very busy on the nightshift.

I never considered the toilets and other "consumable" areas of the train which in a car/van only get checked periodically or when they run out! Makes sense to do them all at once.

Do the toilets and other water users (catering if applicable) have a header tank or are they pumped from a tank below?

That's useful in traffic jams, a car with a toilet. :)

Sounds almost F1 pit-stop like!
