New haulages for August

Diesel locos - 08503, 66753
Unfortunately three railtours within the space of a week brought five duds for haulage (60039, 60040, 60059, 60079, 66001)

EMU - 350372, 350374, 350401, 350409 (just need 350402 to clear the 350/4s)
377701 to 377708 (entire 377/7 subclass)

Metrolink M5000s - 3067, 3074, 3084, 3085 (now had all M5000s up to 3085 except 3075)

Jeepers, that's impressive! As detailed in my post the other day, I'm a LONG way off clearing the Southeastern lot!

Makes sense I suppose when it's my local TOC! If you saw my coverage of, say, Northern or ATW, you'd be saying Jeepers for quite different reasons!

Now I'm on my commute home, I have time to post the data earlier mentioned!

Requirements by TOC, as of 27/08/2014:

ATW: 1

Haha we all know what this one is!

Yes indeed, can't be many people on the forum unaware 150235 is my last ATW 150 to get! Might, just MIGHT, be coming down to Cardiff on the 8th (vice Great Escape) just to get the infernal thing found!

Thanks for saying. The main reason I have so much chiltern stuff is I won't travel on the 165s unless very necessary. The way I mean is that the only 165s I have traveled on are a pair of Chiltern ones from Leamington Spa to Warwick Parkway. Well done at getting all of the 67s on the route! :)

Cheers, although I don't count the 67s as part of the Chiltern fleet.

Why not travel on 165s, they're surprisingly hellfire on the Midlands runs, unlike Princes Risborough to Aylesbury...

Fixed that!

Fair point, ATW, FGW and LM have been my local TOCs for quite the long time so it stands to reason my fleet requirements with them are low!

It's true though, if I do fester in Cardiff for it it won't turn up!

August 2014 Haulage Report
August came and went it seems in almost a flash but that was probably because I was out and about so much trying to scratch outright winners and find all those units still needed for 10 miles. I achieved some significant milestones such as clearing the 377s for the fourth time and finding both of my last 450s. Without any further ado, here are the notable entries from the August haulage log.

1-Aug-14
August started with a day trip to Liverpool with the primary aim of photographing Merseyrail units and particularly hunting down the very elusive 508111 (The Beatles Story) which was also needed for a ride. While 508111 did not appear, Virgin were at least kind enough to provide winning Pendolinos to and from Liverpool. Further trips to Liverpool are in the embryonic stages of planning as there’s still four winners there as well as a stack of ten-milers. Another bonus was a new shack (Bootle Oriel Road)

Nothing special really apart from clearing my 377s for no less than the 4th time. First time was the original build for Southern, then again with the 377/5s for Thameslink. A few months back I managed to get all the 377/6s and now the last 377/7 came my way.

The second long distance trip of the month and it’s only the 8th. This time Manchester was on my radar with 142s the number one target although there were several distractions along the way which reduced the time available for grabbing those four wheeled “nodding donkeys”. Also holding a Cheshire Day Ranger restricted my ability to travel at will throughout Greater Manchester. Another trip to Manchester will be had before the year is out to further knock the numbers down. But it was not all bad as Virgin excelled themselves again by offering up two winning Pendolinos including my penultimate nine-car unit (390005 being the odd man out for anyone who’s interested). One notable hit was 153385 having last encountered this 25 years ago when it was part of 155335. The shack count also went up with the scoring of Alsager and Wilmslow.

The other half was off to see friends in Sussex so I was free to wander at will but I stayed within London, mainly photographing debranded FCC units at Kings Cross but those required 313s were just too tempting as was a spin to Potters Bar with317345. Just a pity that a totally dud 321 was provided for the return leg!

A photographic trip to Eastleigh courtesy of a South West Trains Free Weekend Travel ticket came with the health warning to my accomplice “If I see any of my required SWT units, I’ll be off for a short spin”. I might have expected to get one but two was beyond expectation leaving me with just one each of classes 158/8 and 450 to go.

Having dispatched the other half off to see her sisters and buoyed by the success of a previous trip to Great Northern land, I scooted off to Kings Cross with the camera trying to get more debranded FCC units. I did not expect to score half of my 313s needed for 10 miles and all bar two of the outright winning 365s. Both of the others (518 and 540) were active but inaccessible.

With the success of the previous Friday at Eastleigh in driving out those last few outright winners on SWT, I ventured forth hoping to get either my last 158/8 or my last 450 with the priority being the 158 (885 for the record). I hatched a plan to cover all the known 158 workings and do things such as taking a look at the green 456s on the Guildford to Ascot route. As I left Waterloo on the 08:50 to Salisbury, I passed 450120 arriving. A check of Realtime Trains indicated the 09:15 to Haselmere might be a good bet for 120’s next working (and it was!). With 450s out of the way, my attentions turned to seeking out 158885 but it was obviously having an off day. But there were other bonuses such as getting my last two 159s over 10 miles and falling into 5913 for only my second run with it since the famous altercation with a cement mixer. 159021 made a welcome return to the haulage log – its last appearance was 21 years ago! Add in two new shacks (Ash Vale & Brookwood) to give me a good outcome for the day. Those SWT Free Weekend Travel tickets are really value for money.

A third free Saturday in a month, whatever next? This all came up at short notice so West Yorkshire was the best available option for a full day trip as prices to Manchester were above acceptable levels. Hoping for a few Heaton allocated 142s to be chugging around Leeds, I headed north (in the event I saw only two). The Sheffields were all 144 although a 150 came out later on. Admittedly, I was a little constrained by wanting to do all of the lines through Brighouse since I had no record of doing the track previously but as was to be expected, West Yorkshire is not as productive as say Manchester. There were far more 15x units around than I remember from previous Saturday visits. OK I plucked a few winners but it was really 142/144s that I went for. The two 155s deserve a special mention as they were both last recorded over 25 years ago when they were winners! Three shacks, Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge & Horsforth, completed the day’s tally.

So was August a good month? Definitely “yes” if only because of 46 outright winners and two more classes cleared (377 and 450) with another class cleared for 10 miles. Realistically, I do not expect to clear any more classes this year despite a few being in with a shout. Nevertheless, watch this space!

They're not usually that much noisier than a 168 in my experience, I've heard noisier! I like the noise personally.

How did you clear XC/HT then?

It's not like I've never travelled anywhere else apart from my own area! It took me a long time to clear the XC fleet, then having to re-clear the fleet when the XC power cars got re-numbered. HT got cleared after they went exclusively 180, and all their 180s were done way back when FGW had the entire fleet to themselves. The 222s are added to EMT's fleet since that's where they've been for years.

I think my numbers for LM need changing as I might have missed the LM 321s in my counts.

Judging by the rest of the post (oh, and I must mention I loved the 'health warning' you mentioned on your trip to Eastleigh! :D), which I've cut out, it was a mighty fine month for you!

Well jealous!

Coming down nicely :)

Northern's not due to get that many 319s so the count'll not go up too high! Plus they'll be easier to find as you're not going to find them on a Blackpool South to Colne (for example) after all are you?

After a trip on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway over the weekend I picked up two Class 101 coaches 50170 and 51188.

Great little line and can't believe it had been nearly 3 years since i last went on it (especially as my father in law lives 5 minutes walk from it!).

Onwards and upwards with my Northern fleet. Spent a good day last Thursday in the Leeds area bashing a few more Northern Rail units of my requirement list. Came away with needing just one 144 for sighting (144013) and one 333 for haulage (333012).

4th Septemeber

333007 (NO)
333009 (NO)
333010 (NO)
333011 (NO)
333016 (NO)

So, that is another 13 Northern units off leaving 166 left :). Next three trips planned but I am leaving Northern alone for a while. Later this week I have a two day trip to the SVR. Hopefully a few new LM trains for me as well as new locos on the SVR.

The week after a two day trip to Cardiff followed by the week after that a two day trip to Edinburgh trying to knock off quite a few ATW and SR units. May be able to fit a few single days out in between but will have to wait and see on that.:)

Another 5 new stations to add to my list: Outwood, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Frizinghall, Menston and Bingley. Question on station bagging, if anyone of you can help. I do station bagging as stations that I have actually stood on, is this the normal method or am I making it really hard on myself?

Just to please you some more, 92038 was driven in tandem with 92028 south of Rugby  Hopefully you were onboard for weekend winner No 3!
I most definitely was on board south of Rugby, however 92038 and both EDs were not required. The former was had in December 2005 (and had worked a tour prior to that) though the EDs were a welcome re-aquaintance from December 2003 (109) and one trip  between Victoria and Gatwick in October 1997 (207)

Here's my August list of haulage gains:

2nd:

21405/6 ( S7 )

4th:

3850 ( steam )

25308
4956
4909
4346
9227
4876 ( all carriages )

11th:

4936 ( steam )

25323
35257
5002
4875
4814
4260 ( all carriages )

It is possible that I might have previously bashed some of those Mk1s in the 49xx / 50xx sequence but right now I haven't got the time to check back through 20 or so issues of the Combined Volume...

Same for me, but like everything else in the hobby you make your own rules! I was debating whether to change my rule on stations, as it would be simply so much easier. However it wouldn't be as much fun!

As for my own red penning lately...

8th September 2014

150105 (last LM DMU to get!)
321411
321412
321414
321415 (now only need 321416 of the LM fleet but that was parked on Bletchley CS all day)

350244
350245
350247
350253
350256
350261
350266
350267 (now down to just 3 more 350/2s to get!)

Stations wise, new ones were Park Street, Kings Langley, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Cheddington, Leighton Buzzard and Aspley Guise.

I'm very pleased with that result, fair dos! All the details of the trip will be in the trip report, due to be typed up this weekend :)

Which line was it on Bedford-Bletchley or Hereford. I need 107 & 109 and have a Great Escape voucher for Thursday.

Love that term, I must remember to use it. Of course, you'll be credited in the trip report that I first use it in :)

Which line was it on Bedford-Bletchley or Hereford. I need 107 & 109 and have a Great Escape voucher for Thursday.

150105 was working 1731 Bletchley to Bedford (153366 was on the other diagram FYI) yesterday, 8th September 2014.

150109 was stabled on Bletchley CS all day (well, all afternoon/evening) so I'm guessing 107 was either on TS or Hereford services yesterday. Do bear in mind the 150 diagram is often a 170 vice 150, depending on 150 availability.

Hope the above helps!

Trip to Carlisle on Tuesday produced two new winners for haulage.

Scotrail 156512 on Carlisle to Haltwhistle and
Northern 153328 on Carlisle to Dalston. This was my last Northern Rail unit to ride. However this has now gone back to one with the arrival at Allerton Depot this afternoon of 319363.

100 miles club - 350405 (127.04 miles) and 150224 (102.46 miles).
