Reminds me of the year Rail ran a story that numbers on rolling stock were to be replaced by barcodes. Suggestion was to photograph everything and get the supermarket till to read them!It's across all TOCs, so my thought was also as poster above, April 1st.!

The April 1st explanation makes more sense than my first thought when checking some Scotrail trains, that it was due to the Scottish Government takeover !

Fair point - it happens to me a fair bit as well actually, usually when i'm participating in the games section!
I wonder if anyone will realistically try and work out all their trains using the roman numerals...

I did it twice to see if they matched correctly with the listed number, while trying earlier to fathom what was going on before I clocked the date and so on

If you look reeeeallly closely, there's a special extended coupling bar between the power car and the coach, which is needed because the number in Roman numerals is longer than the power car itself. That engineering solution required a lot of thought at Laira when they found out the renumbering was going to happen.

Being pedantic as the loco number is 43285 not 43 285, I would have given the number as CXLIIIϽCCLXXXV.
I couldn’t work out a reasonable way of doing it for multiple units without an absurd number of Ms as I only worked on it for about 15 minutes, so the TOPS split between class and vehicle was necessary to not break the page

That could open a whole new can of worms! When the TOPS renumbering scheme was first introduced in 1973(?), the idea was to distinguish between the class number and loco number....and most of the early renumbered locos had their numbers painted with a space between the class number and loco number, continental-style, and that is the way I have always written them. At some later stage the documentation was changed to show a single five digit number.

But as HST power cars were originally numbered as coaching stock there is no class number...

There was for the original formations - 253 for the 2+7 GWML versions and 254 for the 2+8 ECML ones. 43002 in the NRM has 253 001 on the front as a result.
That was before they started swapping power cars around, hence the change. The GWR 2+5 rakes are formally known in house as Class 255, but no fixed unit formations exist. Which was the case for most of the first generation DMUs.

It was an excellent April Fool spoof, well done and thank you (and yes, I did work out some set numbers from the Roman numerals before realising the 'proper' number was shown further down the page !)
