I get the train to and from Manchester most days and there is a strange quirk of driving that I've noticed. On leaving Manchester towards Warrington, normally on the TP Express, the routine tends to be a fairly slow trundle through Deansgate and on past Castlefield. When it gets towards Manchester United, the driver normally floors it and off we go.

However, quite often, just after accelerating hard, the driver jams the brakes on and its a crawl past Old Trafford to the container depot and then full bore.

Does anyone know what this is about? It happens reasonably often.

I tend to only knock 5-8mph off when doing a running brake test, and that is in step one and I think most passengers tend not to notice. Is there a TSR in the area?

I'm no expert but it seems a bit severe for a brake test.

Must be a temporary speed limit and the driver is trying to minimize the time lost?

I'll get me sectional appendix out later but I'm sure there are multiple changes of speed along the stretch mentioned including a (not so temporary) TSR. There is also a signal protecting the junction into MUFC halt and the freight terminal which can be slow to clear if there is anything running into there in front of you. But it sounds to frequent to just be that.

The odd driver may do it just to ensure the guard gets bumps and bruises as they go through checking tickets. Or is that just EMT?

If it only happens certain times then it sounds as if a driver is being vigourous with the brake test.

Some companies PDP quotes that a running brake test MUST be carried out with a minimum step 2 brake application reducing the speed by at least 10mph. Some traction do have a strong step 2.

Agreed - to lessen the effect I go into step 1 first then step 2. It's good to get a feel for step 1 anyway as I do most of my braking in that step.

Depends on the traction - for tread braked I do step 1 first then 2 and for disc I go straight into 2. I do nearly all my initial braking in step 2 to kill the speed and get a grip of the traction unit :)

Exactly what I do. I always bear in mind who will be looking at the data i.e my boss. So will give it a real good speed reduction

Yeah, I guess there are local instructions. Dunno what you were told during your time at Chiltern but I tend to use step one and just leave the brake in until I am satisfied there has been a retardation in speed. I'm sure I've been downloaded a hundred times and I've never been pulled up about it.
