I just felt it had to be said. I challenge grammar Nazis to learn another language and write in it on a forum of that language without any mistakes. Then you get a flavour of how it feels, when you struggle to write perfectly.

Not being in it for the money can be a great advantage for quality of life sometimes. There's a quote (I read it attributed to John Lennon) that goes something along the lines of "Find a job you enjoy doing, that way you'll never have to work a day in your life".

Quite. I'm always being told the pay's low, to think about it etc etc, but that doesn't really bother me.

Anyone who has the mindset of "Don't worry, you're supposed to fail First Year, it's all about bedding you into the experience" wouldn't last five minutes in the workplace.

If anyone wants a little story, during my first two months at Uni, so before I joined this forum, I lived with three other people in a small flat five minutes from Bath Spa station which had an excellent view of the GWML. However, two of these three were replacements for another two who had dropped out (based on the fact that the other person also liked trains, I assume that was the initial thing that put us together), and arrived the day Uni started. Within literally one hour, they were in the other guy's room, using something that begins with "M", ends in "A", sounds distinctly Spanish, and is more often than not given its colloquial name which rhymes with "deed". They then proceeded to sleep with quite a few girls at Uni, never attended lessons, and in all honesty should never have left home because they weren't ready. It got even worse when I told them I was leaving to move on campus; they tried to steal my TV! Finally, come the January, they were expelled. The other guy also left, but he has returned.

How different to me is that? The Uni made a grave mistake there, and even I have lost count of the number of apologies and attempts to hearten me I've had...

Question: If we made a poll for 10,000 students as to their real reason for attending, how many would say they were "attending" for other alcohol/substance purposes or for sleeping around...?

Was more fun transporting Saffron, got to the end of one of my delivery notes for a certain chain of high class public houses that have branches in Harrogate, Ilkley and Manchester to my knowlage, and it came to £12,600 in one delivery... 17 boxes.

Although another three places in Cheshire had deliveries 3 times a week, each got a pallet each time, and they came to £10k each...

If ya have that kinda cash to spend on Butler's Blacksticks or Dew Lay Crumbly Lancashire than I'm sure they'll want to hear from you...

If they did such a thing at my Uni it would probably cost more than Spoons' steaks!

Back on topic, allow me to provide another. Can I suggest the notorious point of traffic lights at roundabouts? Although sometimes helpful, e.g. (from a local perspective) the junction of the A4 with the Bristol Ring Road, such things are far too commonplace! Most of the time, they add to the delays!

I generally agree here, but these lights are a godsend. I did my driving lessons/test around here, as well as going to college nearby and that roundabout was an absolute nightmare, especially when coming out from Keynsham.

The Dartmouth Circus just outside Birmingham is another one that needs lights. I'd like to see Spitfire Island gain some too

Although if you want to moan about lack of university facilities, look at whats happened to the UMIST campus since the takeover, and just recently they've realised the're not allowed to sell off half the buildings anyway.

THIS BIT HAS BEEN EDITED Too true. But sometimes from a Keynsham perspective they seem to give a bit too much preference to the A4, paralysing local traffic. Just as well the buses can use the turn-off to avoid the roundabout...

Regarding Uni food, in my first year my Uni had a nasty habit of not knowing how much things cost, in spite of me repeatedly telling them that they kept charging different amounts! One day I was charged 40p for milk, the next it was 80p (hideous) - and then it was 50p. Whatever! Still, they did undercharge most of the time, so I couldn't complain too much. Even now they undercharge me intentionally sometimes; last I checked, £1.20+£1.20+£1.20+50p was £4.10, not £2.00!

Quite a few roundabouts round here have P/T signals, handy at places like M60J6, but some places would be impossible without lights, look at the end of Trafford Parkway between Parkway and Lostock Circles!

On the subject of traffic I do enjoy smirking at cars in a long queue on the Aston expressway trying to get on the M6 whereas the bus, being local traffic, zooms past on the right

Oh, and add to my list, the 'improvments' on Chapel St in Salford... Yeah, great idea, lets cut the A6 from 3 to 1 lane in each directon, slap a 20 limit on it and make it curvey with a full time bus lane!

Just to widen the footpaths slightly the've effectively closed one of the main routes into Manchester!
