OK. Challenge is, imagine you've got an ALR for one day. Start at your local station on the first train out, no matter where it's going. You ride to its destination. You then take the next train out from that location, no matter where it's going, and ride to its destination. You keep doing this until the trains stop. See where you end up and how much mileage you get. Connection rules must be obeyed according to the timetable, e.g. you have to allow at least 10 minutes at Leeds. At places where it isn't specified allow a minimum of 3 minutes.

I got:

Saltaire > Leeds > Bradford Forster Square > Ilkley > Forster Square > Leeds > Knaresborough > Leeds > Edinburgh > Dunbar > Edinburgh > Glasgow Queen St > Dunblane > Edinburgh > Queen St > Alloa > Queen St > Springburn > Balloch.

664.75 miles.

I had this (simultaneous departures to Edinburgh and the Cross) so just chose one (Edinburgh) and carried on from there.

Someones going to have to point me in the direction of a decent website for this. National Rail live departure boards are only for the current time.

I suspect most of us are using the physical book. NRE website in its absence, but it'd be very hard to look things up quickly.

I've a vague feeling this could get a bit repetitive for me...

0431 Westcliff - Fenchurch Street (FST) 0530 (via Basildon-BSO) 34m 66 ch
0540 FST - Shoeburyness (SRY) 0648 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch
0653 SRY - FST 0800 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch
0810 FST - SRY 0918 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch

1220 SRY - FST 1324 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch
1335 FST - Grays (GRY) 1410 (via Dagenham Dock, DDK) -19m 66 ch
1416 GRY - FST 1451 (via DDK) -19m 66 ch
1510 FST - SRY 1620 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch
1628 SRY - FST 1733 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch
1745 FST - SRY 1848 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch

2030 FST - SRY 2134 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch
2205 SRY - FST 2313 (via BSO) - 38m 40 ch
2335 FST - GRY 0010 (via DDK) -19m 66 ch
0027 GRY - SRY 0117 - 25m 49 ch

= 582 miles

In reality I would probably get more trips than that done - 10 minutes connection time is certainly not required at Fenchurch Street

But what a boring day!

Am I allowed to continue until 24 hours is up or only until the ticketing day changes at 02.00?

03.50 Brighton - Victoria 05.58 if I am....

Sorry - haven't got time to add up the mileage right now!

As with others, there are quite a few trains I could have got sooner at Victoria if it wasn't for the 15 minute interchange time required by the rules; I know I can get across from one side to the other much faster than that if I have to!

I'm glad I don't live on the LTS route any more. Sorry W-on-Sea.

Let's see...

0543 BTH - PAD 0717 106.66
0732 PAD - HXX 0805 14.43
0813 HXX - HWV 0816 1.59

2055 PAD - HWV 2115 16.22
2127 HWV - PAD 2149 16.22
2210 PAD - RDG 2314 35.73
2324 RDG - OXF 2348 27.33

0144 PAD - RDG 0238 35.73
0434 RDG - RDH 0539 46.12

(The last one disallows the Riviera to London.)

Total Distance: 992mi 27ch

Agonisingly close to 1,000... If only the North Downs service could get to Gatwick at bit faster :( If, on the other hand, it is not permitted (because it is the next service day), then the distance becomes 946mi 15ch.

1658 Shenfield - Braintree 1739
1744 Braintree - London Liverpool Street 1845

2100 Norwich - London Liverpool Street 2255
2312 London Liverpool Street - Hertford East 0001
0007 Hertford East - London Liverpool Street 0049

Clearly not worth it. I'd rather be going back and forth on c2c than doing that. The 357s are a far more pleasant & comfortable train than anything almost all of those journeys are likely to throw up, in most regards Fenchurch Street is preferable as a London terminal to negotiate than its relatively near neighbout, and it's not as if these destinations or routes are exciting or amazingly scenic!

Couldn't you use Sunday times and chance something from Barking by starting on the Rainham route? It wouldn't give an especially early start, but if it works you could end up at Richmond within an hour or so (even without the District, if you get lucky at Gospel Oak).

Well, nice idea, Ivo, but....guess what. The first train from the Rainham line terminates at Barking at 9.20

...The next (valid, 5 min connection time) train out of Barking is the 9.25 to ...Fenchurch Street. (And the next actual train, the 9.24 is to Shoebury). And then there's another train to Southend via Ockendon before the next Gospel Oak one...

Clearly one is not destined to escape from these Thameside loops.

I may have another go from somewhere else I used to live, well away from c2c-land, and which I would expect to offer a more interesting route...

0617 Leuchars - Edinburgh 0738 - 50 m 57 ch

06:03 Botanic > Newry 0724 44.75 mi
07:35 Newry > Belfast Central 08:47 45.75 mi
08:51 Belfast Central > Great Victoria Street 09:00 2.25 mi

09:30 Belfast Central > Bangor 10:02 12.5 mi
10:27 Bangor > Portadown 11:58 40.25 mi
12:15 Portadown > Bangor 13:43 40.25 mi
13:57 Bangor > Portadown 15:30 40.25 mi
15:45 Portadown > Bangor 17:00 40.25 mi
17:15 Bangor > Belfast Central 17:32 12.5 mi
17:35 Belfast Central > Larne Town 18:16 24.75 mi
18:21 Larne Town > Belfast Central 19:17 24.75 mi
19:20 Belfast Central > Great Victoria Street 19:29 2.25 mi
19:43 Great Victoria Street > Londonderry 21:57 95.75 mi

Pretty boring really TBH. 428.5 miles.

You can check your mileage here. You might need to enter some via points in order to get it to work out the correct route, otherwise it will only work out the shortest.

According to the TSO timetable all these comply with the minimum connection times, unless there's any I've missed.

Is that the biggest mileage so far? There is some advantage to living in Swinton it would seem!

I've got three local stations.

BLAIRHILL
This is based on the full Airdrie-Bathgate timetable, because otherwise I'd end up going back and forth between Airdrie and Helensburgh most of the day!

05:42 Blairhill-Balloch a06:44 27mi, 46ch
06:53 Balloch-Airdrie a08:09 30mi, 9ch
08:20 Airdrie-Milngavie a09:07 19mi, 58ch
09:12 Milngavie-Motherwell via Hamilton a10:11 23mi, 35ch
10:16 Motherwell-Lanark a10:44 15mi, 78ch
10:53 Lanark-Milngavie via Hamilton a12:22 42mi, 49ch
12:27 Milngavie-Edinburgh via Airdrie, a13:57 53mi, 11ch
14:11 Edinburgh-Newcraighall, a14:22 4mi, 54ch
14:37 Newcraighall-Edinburgh via Fife Circle, a16:49 67mi, 23ch
17:00 Edinburgh-London King's Cross, a21:44 393mi, 13ch
22:00 London King's Cross-Newcastle, a02:18 268mi, 56ch

Total: 946miles, 23chains

I must admit, that's a tempting first day plan for an ALR should I ever go on one!

KIRKWOOD

06:09 Kirkwood-Glasgow Central, a06:35 10mi, 3ch
06:50 Glasgow Central-Glasgow Central via Cathcart Circle, a07:20 8mi, 2ch
07:35 Glasgow Central-Gourock, a08:28 26mi, 11ch
08:36 Gourock-Glasgow Central, a09:28 26mi, 11ch
09:45 Glasgow Central-Largs, a10:47 42mi, 57ch
10:53 Largs-Glasgow Central, a11:52 42mi, 57ch
12:07 Glasgow Central-Paisley Canal, a12:25 7mi, 50ch
12:30 Paisley Canal-Glasgow Central, a12:49 7mi, 50ch
13:05 Glasgow Central-Neilston, a13:34 11mi, 17ch
14:00 Neilston-Glasgow Central, a14:29 11mi, 17ch
14:45 Glasgow Central-Largs, a15:44 42mi, 57ch
15:53 Largs-Glasgow Central, a16:52 42mi, 57ch
17:07 Glasgow Central-Paisley Canal, a17:25 7mi, 50ch
17:30 Paisley Canal-Glasgow Central, a17:53 7mi, 50ch
18:12 Glasgow Central-Kilmarnock, a18:50 24mi, 17ch
18:57 Kilmarnock-Glasgow Central, a19:35 24mi, 17ch
19:50 Glasgow Central-York, a00:06 254mi, 17ch
00:50 York-Newcastle, a02:18 80mi, 16ch

Total: 767miles, 76 chains

I was rather hoping to get out of Glasgow earlier. Sadly, the criteria means that I spend all day going in and out of Central, not leaving the SPT area until the 19:50 to York. Of course, the sheer volume of trains in and out of Glasgow Central will always be a barrier to getting anywhere in this challenge, So it leads to a disapointing mileage. I must admit, I thought it would have been higher than the Blairhill one.

COATBRIDGE CENTRAL

06:40 Coatbridge Central-Milngavie a07:51 28mi, 59ch
07:58 Milngavie-Motherwell via WCML a08:45 20mi, 75ch
08:50 Motherwell-Milngavie via Hamilton a09:52 23mi, 35ch
09:57 Milngavie-Edinburgh via Airdrie a11:27 53mi, 11ch
11:45 Edinburgh-Glasgow Central via Falkirk High, a12:37 47mi, 23ch
12:48 Glasgow Queen Street-Dunblane, a13:43 34mi, 41ch
13:58 Dunblane-Edinburgh, a15:02 41mi, 34ch

I had expected that to be a lot better, but once again the lack of trains out of Scotland proved my nemesis. There was definitely the potential to get good connections to the South and, as a result, a better mileage, but sadly it was not to be.

So, all in all, a real surprise for me. I most certainly did not expect Blairhill to be the best source of mileage, although of course the reopening to Edinburgh has helped matters somewhat. None of mine have excitingly high mileages, but you do end up quite far away from Coatbridge so that's always a good thing!
