I'll see what happens when I try from my official local shack of Mexborough...

05:52 Mexborough-Beverley 07:51 56.14
07:57 Beverley-Hull 08:13 8.20
08:28 Hull-Doncaster 09:31 40.68
09:36 Doncaster-London KGX 11:34 155.77
11:45 London KGX-Kings Lynn 13:20 99.22
13:56 Kings Lynn-London KGX 15:33 99.22
15:45 London KGX-Kings Lynn 17:21 99.22
17:36 Kings Lynn-London KGX 19:34 99.22
19:48 London KGX-Bradford Interchange 23:12 209.04
23:31 Bradford Interchange-Huddersfield 00:08 18.60
00:13 Huddersfield-Manchester Airport 01:13 36.25

Total = 922.36

That list doesn't seem to abide by official connection times...

Even if you start at some shack in the middle of nowhere you can end up in some unlikely places (sorry I haven't done any milages for this one)

Berney Arms 0801 - Great Yarmouth 0812
Great Yarmouth 0817 - Norwich 0850
Norwich 0857 - Liverpool Lime Street 1431
Liverpool Lime Street 1443 - Chester 1526
Chester 1532 - Chester (via Wirral Loop) 1656
Chester 1702 - Chester (via Wirral Loop) 1826
(Note - I manage to escape the Wirral line at this point as the Liverpool service departs at 1830, and where no connection time is specified in the timetable, the minimum time is 5 minutes.)
Chester 1849 - Manchester Airport 2013
Manchester Airport 2020 - Scarborough 2306

To that end, I've decided to give Wick a go, given that it's about the only place that far North anywhere close to civilisation. And even that's debatable! (Apologies to the teuchters, of course ;) )

06:20 Wick-Inverness, a10:35 161mi, 13ch
10:47 Inverness-Edinburgh via Kirkcaldy, a14:19 174mi, 68ch
14:30 Edinburgh-Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High, a15:20 47mi, 23ch
15:30 Glasgow Queen Street-Edinburgh via Falkirk High, a16:18 47mi, 23ch
16:30 Edinburgh-Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High, a17:21 47mi, 23ch
17:31 Glasgow Queen Street-Balloch, a18:09 20mi, 3ch
18:03 Balloch-Springburn, a19:27 23mi, 50ch
19:39 Springburn-Balloch, a20:40 23mi, 50ch
20:53 Balloch-Springburn, a21:57 23mi, 50ch
22:09 Springburn-Balloch, a23:10 23mi, 50ch

Total: 592 miles, 33 chains

Perhaps rather disapointing, given that it's the terminus of the Far North Line.

Of course, shuttling to and from Springburn at that time of night is not to be recommended!

As an alternative how about a 'Zone 1 - 6 One Day Travelcard' random day. This would involve travelling on Undergeround, DLR, Croydon Tramlink and National Rail services from originating station to final destination. Here's one example.

Gospel Oak - Barking
Barking - Hammersmith (Hammersmith & City Line)
Hammersmith - Edgware Road (Circle Line)
Edgware Road - Wimbledon (District Line)
Wimbledon - New Addington (Croydon Tramlink)
New Addington - Wimbledon (Croydon Tramlink)
Wimbledon - Upminster (District Line)
Upminster - Romford
Romford - Upminster
Upminster - Richmond (District Line)
Richmond - Stratford
Stratford - Canary Wharf (DLR)
Canary Wharf - Stratford (DLR)
Stratford - Stanmore (Jubilee Line)
