(silly, serious, speculative)

Prediction Number One: There will be more Pacers in daily operation on Network Rail lines in January 2020 than HST sets in daily operation on Network Rail lines in January 2020

Prediction Number Two: HS2 will be built and will work as planned, even if the cost to the taxpayer is huge.

Further cuts in investment for Network Rail (or whatever publicly owned organisation is responsible for operating the National Rail network) see numerous signal boxes retained instead of control being transferred to the new style Operations Centres.

Northern Rail get all of the old Mark 4 sets and we will see 91 + Mk4 + Mk4 + Mk4 + Mk4 DVT on lines like Blackpool to Liverpool and Manchester once electrified.

HS2 will not be built in the form outlined in the current proposals. It will either be cancelled before construction begins or built in a truncated and/or watered down form.

The 'Cost of living' political battleground will move onto rail fares. The government now says all fares to be governed by the inflation + % deal. Where is that money coming from?

It might not mean too much, but if politics demands a price freeze before the 2015 election that could prove expensive. Plus TFL would be sniffing around under that scenario and it might be price their willing to pay to make sure Boris runs for a third term as Mayor rather than setting the cat among the pigeons with him being on the back benches.

The Edinburgh Trams will open fine with no teething problems and passengers levels will reach expected levels.

By 2050, the nation which invented rail travel will no longer have a rail network.
All rolling stock will have been sold off or scrapped. All stations will have been closed and platforms removed. All railway track will have been taken up and the trackbed used for high speed electric buses using a technologically advanced version of the existing auminium-air battery.
These new bus routes will be secured to prevent access by ordinary road vehicles - possibly by a button on the bus control panel opening gates at appropriate points.
Any unauthorized vehicle detected on a dedicated electric bus route will render the driver/operator liable for a 50,000 Euro fine (allowing for galloping inflation) and the confiscation of the offending vehicle.

Travel from Holyhead to Cardiff 《ROUTE NOT ENGLAND》becomes possible once the Ffestiniog Railway's Southern extension reaches Merthyr Tydfil.

On a similar note, Chathill gets an all day service once Metrolink's Ashton Line extension is completed.

Four Class 141 pacers are returned from Iran to provide rolling stock for the Todmorden Curve.

The Bluebell Railway's Diesel Gala is disrupted by Pure Steam fundamentalists.

The All Line Rover is formally renamed "Day Return from Carlisle to Middlesbrough".

89001 returns to service with Grand Central.

East Coast is disbanded. Pacers run York-Peterborough to connect with thameslink EMU at Peterborough and to connect with Virgin XC voyagers at York.

Class 91s and mark 4 coaches to work Liverpool-Scarborough.

The first desiro is preserved.

So In the event of a yes vote is that to prevent the english getting out or the scots getting in?

Intercity 225 sets will take over TPX services to Scotland and Newcastle

185's are cascaded to take over the Barton on Humber branch, and new 15 min interval service from Cleephorpes to Manchester via Brigg.

Was on a train in July at Newry when the PSNI asked everybody for ID.
Two what looked like Chinese gentlemen were taken off the train by the PSNI.
Would imagine the same thing will happen at Carlisle or Berwick even just to show it can be done.
Have saw cars and coaches being stop at Gretna, so maybe it's not that far fetched.

Some of my gut feeling predictions.

1) The Crossrail rolling stock tender will be awarded to Bombardier for Aventra EMUs.

2) The electrifcation of the Gospel Oak - Barking line will cause services to be extended to Grays via Rainham.

3) The MTR Corporation will win the TSGN franchise.

4) HS2 won't be built.

Time will tell...

IEP ordered to replace HSTs on the remaining Great Western duties (i.e. to Devon/ Cornwall) by the end of the decade.

Scarborough and Middlesbrough to gain regular direct trains to London in the next five years, but Halifax and Wrexham to lose their current trains to London.

Wildcard entry: After Scotland gets Independence, Alex Salmond to get delusions of grandeur and insist on a MAC Express version of Y Gerallt Gymro, with Premier Class, full dining facilities and complimentary Tunnocks Teacakes to run between Edinburgh and Inverurie.

As long as they don't provide any Pendelinos on the route. :|

A TOC that actually listens to its passengers and acts positively on their comments.

TOCs all to become 'not for profit' organisations.

Prediction: Kenilworth station will not open before 2020.

Why would they? We already know that East Coast is getting IEPs.

TOCs all to become 'not for profit' organisations.

Many TOCs already are non-profit organizations... well, they don't make a profit so they must be.

One class 91 + a couple of Mk4's + a DVT will be used to run the Stourbridge town shuttle service once the line is electrified

507/8's won't have been replaced on merseyrail. I don't see much substance in Merseytravel's statements regarding new stock. Out of interest, would 455's fit in Mersey tunnels?

Use a full length rake and then you might be able to get between the stations by walking through the train!

I'm not sure, but I don't think they would, since they are slightly taller.

All forms of transport will be replaced with maglevs.

Fossil fuel sourced train (and bus) air pollution will finally be eradicated.

Both of the above will be possible because of new non-polluting energy technologies which provide enough power to make it possible for transports to operate without the need for external power supplies.

Gatwick Express becomes it's own TOC once more and gradually takes over the other airport link sub-brands, leading passengers to Heathrow wondering why their train is the "Gatwick Express service to Heathrow Airport".

HS1 is extended through the Marshlink line to Hastings where it is renamed "Hastings International" after a Eurostar once got missignalled down there.

After putting in a bid for the InterCity East Coast Franchise, Serco and Abellio equip a 142 with restaurant facilities to prove they can fulfill the expectations for catering.

Calling FirstGroup "WorstGroup" will become funny.

In 10 years time, passenger numbers are half what they are now after 10 further years of above inflation fare increases render the network considerably more expensive to use for the average person than simply driving instead.

In 30 years time the last passenger steps off the last train as even more above inflation increases render a personal salaried chaffuer with Mercedes S Class more cost effective than standard class rail travel.

Between the parallel lines
The Brentford Branch is extended to the main passenger-carrying line through Brentford. A North-to-East curve allows trains to run from Heathrow to the WCML/MML via Old Kew Jn, Kew East Jn, Acton Central and the Dudding Hill Line, and a new extension of the GOBLIN (colloquial acronym for identification purposes only) Overground services via Willesden Junction.

The London Overground map will feature lines with different colour codes. Finally.

The North Downs Line will be electrified - initially with third rail throughout. The line will be used to test experimental RHTTs, WSP and other weather resistant technologies during harsher conditions, following a realisation that poor autumn/winter performance must be targeted with revolutionary systems. A new test track will open at the Old Betchworth Quarries, which will feature steep gradients and other challenging terrain.

A new Southern Express service will launch, running from London Bridge & Victoria non-stop to the edge of the London Zones - which will by then extend as far as Redhill, Reigate, Gatwick Airport, Oxted and Dorking to the South - and onwards to the South Coast. The new-build Class 460s used will free up Class 377s to run on semi-fast and stopping services.

An IEP will break down for 7 hours in a "not-especially-remote" location, leading to calls for HSTs to be reintroduced, as passengers become livid onboard when the windows jam, the toilets blowback and it is discovered that the GW franchise holder didn't bother including water supplies.

Altnabreac will still be remote.

Rising fuel prices render air travel unaffordable to all but the well off. High speed links between the UK and Eurasian countries take its place - including a high speed express link between London and Beijing, with a journey time of 20 hours - calling at Berlin, Kiev, Moscow. :p

Which, as it's not operated as part of Nationalrail, ends up costing less than a return ticket from London to Southampton Central.

(Amusingly for much of the UK without the benefit of Virgin Trains priced Advances at £2 each way the UK component of a UK to Europe Eurostar/Thalys/TGV journey is already more expensive a lot of the time than the high speed international leg :D).
