It resulted in the cancellation of moving block signalling for the WCML modernisation programme. It doubled the cost estimates

Which railway town once had a short and never fully completed branch line heading off in one direction and a steam tram in the other?

Wolverton?

Correct. The tram to Stony Stratford (Deanshanger for a while) and the branch line to Newport Pagnell with a started but never completed extension to Olney. Old OS maps show earthworks around Emberton

Was there anything in Ireland (maybe even in the Republic before it was a Republic)?

Glasgow is about the same Longtitude as Plymouth
I just noticed this and don't even know all the details of the historic network in Glasgow so the question is now where was the most westerly section of quadruple track in England?

As we are talking mainland only, I was half-tempted by the North Wales Coast, but in England I'll have a stab at a stretch of the old Blackpool Branch.

Was Ireland merely in the United Kingdom and not Great Britain before the republic was formed then?

I genuinely have no idea. West of Truro, heading to the Falmouth line?

Great Britain is an island ;)
Collection of islands, surely? Or are Anglesea, and the Isle of Wight not part of Great Britain either?

Wikipedia article

Great Britain refers only to the mainland. Otherwise, the informal term British Isles, which does include Ireland, is applicable.

Random fact: Great Britain is the 8th largest island on Earth. Greenland is the largest.
