Something like the class 310 from the WCML clue?
Good guess but not fast enough - they wanted a 100mph unit
Class 321
Not ready for the scrapyard in 2001
Class 323s?
Definitely not ready for the scrapyard
Class 309?
100mph and slam door - just the job! 309616 and 309624 were reclassified to Class 960 and ended their days at Old Dalby.

@D6130 - your empty test track to find a use for - and that's another story too!

Thanks. Now try this one:

On which disused branch line was the Sadler Railcoach tested in the early-mid 1960s?

Alton-Fareham?
Correct.....although by that time it had been reduced to two dead-end freight branches: Fareham-Droxford and Alton-Farringdon. The Sadler Railcoach was based at Droxford and was tested between there and Wickham, for possible future use on the Ryde-Newport-Cowes line on the Isle of Wight.....until some score set it on fire.

Your turn.

To allow a freshly-overhauled (or nearly new) loco, which I think was 7013 'Bristol Castle' to become 4082 'Windsor Castle' and haul King George VI's funeral train.

Swapped the plates by accident and no one ever bothered to fix it?

Sorry, no…

To allow a freshly-overhauled (or nearly new) loco, which I think was 7013 'Bristol Castle' to become 4082 'Windsor Castle' and haul King George VI's funeral train.

…because this is correct; the original 4082 was in Swindon Works and couldn’t be returned to service in time. The two locos retained the altered numbers and names until withdrawal. However, the plaques commemorating George V driving the original 4082 in 1924 were also swapped, but then swapped back to the actual loco he had driven after the funeral train.

To you to name the next question.

Thanks. Continuing on the theme of GWR 'Castles':

What - apart from it's three digit number - was unique about Castle class locomotive no. 111 "Viscount Churchill"?

Is this Western Legionnaire that had a spelling mistake of a missing N resolved by cutting the nameplates and welding a new one in?

To stoik with the Class 52 theme, what was the alternative naming scheme to "Western _______" and what was the example name in that theme proposed for D1000 with some mock ups done?

I'll give you that, though I think it was officially a bit more vauge like Western Region locations rather than beauty spots (currently away from my books)

How long do we wait to declare open floor if @D6130 doesn't respond as the correct guesser?

Note:
If a correct answer is given and accepted to be so in the confirmation posting, the person making the correct answer must set a new question within a period of 48 hours...or OPEN FLOOR will be deemed to be in operation
Just went and looked at post number 1, the given 48 hours has elapsed, so open floor everyone
