Everybody knows (I think) that the GWR completed conversion from broad to standard gauge in 1892. But on which line, and in which year, did gauge conversion by the GWR start?

No. You are looking for a line converted even before St Erth to St Ives (the last broad gauge branch) was built in 1877.

The line in question was a bit of a broad gauge outpost. It connected with the South Wales Railway at its southern end and a couple of GWR standard gauge lines, an LNWR-GWR joint line and (indirectly) a Midland offshoot at the northern end.

Shift about fifty miles to the east and a bit northward. The line in question went through a different coalfield at its southern end.
