I thought it was a 44, but had no idea which one!

Next up: How many LNER Class A4 locomotives were built?

A variation on a question which I have asked in the past (but, re a different year): certain years in the 20th century would seem to have been particularly "sad and bad" ones for closures of, often, attractive lines -- if one likes, rather than despises, "railway byways". Such a year was, in my opinion, 1951: in the British Isles, and further afield. Please give three instances of 1951 closures; preferably, "regardable as regrettable" -- in these islands, or overseas.

If we're looking at closures to passenger services, I can offer:

Glasgow-Aberfoyle

Balloch-Stirling

Chathill-Seahouses

I'd been thinking, rather, total abandonment -- but I ought, then, to have made that clear ! -- in my haste to set question, didn't frame it any too well ... since I didn't rule out "passenger only, retained for freight", I'll give you Glasgow -- Aberfoyle; Seahouses branch was total closure, I think (one of those which particularly sadden me); but the Gartness -- Stirling section of your middle submission, lost its passenger service in 1934 -- retained for freight, but bits of that stretch were abandoned pre-1951.

Turnchapel Branch
Camerton Branch
Princetown Branch.

Turnchapel, and Camerton (freight-only remnant of Limpley Stoke -- Camerton -- Hallatrow line), yes; but Princetown branch's closure to all traffic was in 1956, I think you'll find.

@D6130 and @Ashley Hill: you're "level pegging" with two each. Can either of you submit a valid "third"? -- or, three from anyone else?
