Just to make clear, the vans were originally normal four-wheeled, 10’ wheelbase goods vans.

That is exactly the answer. The two vans were loaded with a variety of sundries (boxes, parcels, small drums, etc.) in the approved manner and were then worked to goods depots to show how it should be done.

You are correct. It was built as a terminus and upon the opening of the extension to Torquay it was renamed Torre. The platform ticket is yours.

Although PNG has had no railways for some time there isn't a 10km test track.
The country in question has a land mass around 4 times that of PNG.

It would indeed. Most railways had finished by the end of WW2 but a military line lasted until 1965. There have been plans to build more lines for 25 years but only the 10km test track has materialised.

I vaguely wondered if it was Libya, as in 2009 Berlusconi gave a four-car AnsaldoBreda IC4 High-Speed DMU to Gaddafi, with the interior (or at least part of it) luxuriously fitted out. The trouble was that the DMU was one of a fleet being delivered to Danish State Railways and nobody had asked them. The first DSB knew was when someone showed them a photo and asked for comments: at first they thought it was a hoax.
@Gloster: I'm serious here -- would you like to take the next question? I feel that you've had more true awareness of the "modern scene" in the country concerned; than me. Libya was a wild guess on my part -- just on the basis of its being definitely big; and having had railways long ago (sweet little Italian 950mm gauge affairs).

What I wrote is effectively all I know about the country’s railways, except what I could look up in Hugh Hughes’ book. I came at it from covering the Danish end for many years.
I really haven’t got a question and may be a bit busy for the next couple of days. So I will leave it to you or to anyone who wants the honour.

(The following question is confined to public railways -- industrial, etc., outside its scope.)
South America has had -- very largely, still has -- a remarkable variety of gauges on its railways: featuring the majority of those which have had a fair degree of prominence on public railways worldwide. Taking South America as meaning, the continent east-and-south from Colombia, inclusive: please give one gauge, with a reasonable "scope and range" of use in the world at large -- which is not, and has not been, used in South America.
As question-setter, will use my own judgement as to what gauges count as reasonable-scope-and-range; and which I adjudge to be too uncommon / specialised / freakish, to make the grade.
