Something to do with darkness?
The primary cause wasn't anything to do with darkness although obviously the conditions in a tunnel, particularly one on a sharp curve like Canonbury, might prevent a driver seeing a train ahead and being able to stop before hitting it.

It's the location in railway terms which is relevant to the primary cause. It may help to know that trains approaching Canonbury Junction from Finsbury Park were involved.

They weren't still using the time interval system in 1881 were they? Was this the incident in which a train crew passed out because of fumes in the tunnel and the next train ran into the back of it because it had been sent in by time interval? Or am I thinking of a different accident altogether?

You are on the right track, but the line was block worked in normal circumstances.

The train crews had nothing to do with the primary cause.

The question contains a clue - i.e. "what was standardised ..". What did the Canonbury curve connect?

Ah right, it presumably connected two different railways, who I guess at that time had different rules and regulations and ways of working. If it was block worked then maybe the issue was they had different bell codes and that caused confusion?

Good one. @SteveM70 - that's exactly the primary cause.

It was the AM peak. The eastbound North London Railway was recovering after being blocked at Dalston by a locomotive with a blown boiler tube. The NLR signaller at Canonbury Junction had received 6 beats ("line obstructed - positive block") from Canonbury Station and passed this on to the GNR signalman at the GNR No 1 box just north of the tunnel. The GNR man was faced with a series of NLR suburban trains heading from the ECML to Broad Street and kept sending 1-2 beats ("be ready - is line clear for passenger train?") to Canonbury Junction. At some point, as the line towards Dalston Junction was clearing, the Canonbury Junction signaller sent 7 beats ("obstruction - permissive working") to GNR No 1 in response. This wasn't allowable on GNR territory except on goods lines, but the GNR signaller (who was a relief man who worked at different boxes) looked at the NLR bell codes card and interpreted it as allowing him to send trains forward under caution. What he should have done was contact the NLR signaller and agree on how the section was to be worked. What he actually did was to start working the section on the time interval system. He had sent four trains forward in this way without cautioning the drivers and only stopped when the guard of the second train reached his box to tell him that there had been three collisions in the tunnel, the first train having stopped at the junction protecting signal.

The GNR signaller was entirely blamed for the accident, but I can't work out why the NLR man didn't send 6 beats to the GNR box as soon as he knew the first collision occurred. Instead he appears to have kept sending 7.

So what was standardised was the system of bell codes.

In the UK trains drive on the left if there are two or more tracks, motor vehicles drive on the left too, simples. In some other countries road vehicles drive on the right, but trains go on the left.

Please name countries in mainland Europe where trains drive on the left.

Belgium, Italy and Portugal. The deciding factor is whether the first railways in those countries were designed by British engineers. The exceptions were Austria and Switzerland. The former had left hand running on some routes (mainly in the West) and right hand running on other routes (mainly in the East), but has recently standardised on right hand running throughout. Switzerland, IIRC, originally used left hand running, but all main lines are now bi-directionally signalled and recent trends on many main lines seem to tend towards right hand running. Happy to be corrected by those with greater or more recent knowledge.

@D6130 guessed the most and may set the next question.

Most lines in Sweden and Slovenia keep left too. Apparently there are some 'Ueberwerfbauwerke', over-throw bridges in France to put the trains on the correct side when leaving or entering the area where they go on the right.

Might train drivers be confused, driving a car home on the right after driving a train on the left?

A "random" German aircraft happening to be on the spot, attempted a "train-busting" exercise on the branch train: turned out to be a "the biter bit" scenario -- cascade of steam from the loco hit the plane in a vulnerable spot, and brought it down.

A loco shot down an aircraft, a Fw190 piloted by Heinrich Bierwurth (I think). The aircraft was one of two that had had killed a fireman at Ashford; it was a Brighton 0-4-4T. (The loco, I mean, not the aircraft.)

Both correct....ex-LBSCR class D3 tank loco no.2365 was strafed with machine-gun fire by the Luftwaffe FW 190 and its boiler exploded bringing down the aircraft and killing its pilot just as it flew over it. The loco was rebuilt and and re-entered service eleven months later.

Although your responses were very close to each other, I think Calthrop won by a whisker....so over to you.

At the beginning of the 1970s the class 33/2 diesel locos were fitted with Slow Speed Control, primarily for two traffics. One was MGR coal, but what was the other?
