Is this to do with the construction of the last batches of 9F's. 92220 Evening Star was the last to be constructed, but was not the last numerically.

No. Ashford’s last built locos were three LMS 2-8-0 in 1944.

I don't think I'm right, there, but as an alternative, can I suggest Ryde, the reason being the restricted size of the rolling stock and locomotives on the Island Line?

Brighton? Locos for a particular line, narrow, very light, old designs? Did Brighton not build some BR standards and Q1 Charlies? Or narrow-gauge engines?

None are correct, I am afraid. The works was mentioned only today in the 1955 electric working thread. It is two of the nine works.

I will give you that. The exact answer is that Brighton, Crewe, Darlington (*), Derby, Doncaster, Horwich and Swindon built both Big Four and BR Standard designs, but Eastleigh and Gorton only built Big Four designs. Eastleigh produced ten Merchant Navy and six West Country, while Gorton produced ten B1. ( * - Darlington even built J72, a pre-grouping design.)
As LSWR Cavalier got most of the works correct, it is for him to take the works floor.
