I thought it was a pure guess but I think I was on the scene at the time so maybe something stuck in my head.

Erm right. This is a bit niche, but I can’t really think of anything else at the moment

Written on the brickwork of the entrance to Kennaway Tunnel in Dawlish are the numbers of two locomotives.
They’ve been there since the early 80s and I’ve met someone that was there when they were painted on using BR yellow paint.
What type of locos were they? And I don’t mind if you Google it at actually.

Edit - I don’t know how I’ve managed to write all of that in bold, but I’m sorry if it looks like I’m shouting...

Good enough for me (sorry @444045), there’s been class 45 and 46 numbers painted on there for the best part of 40 years by a couple of local Peak bashers.
That’s some strong paint considering it’s been battered by wind and salt for decades.

I’ve recently been given a copy of the 1983 annual report and accounts of the British Railways Board, and it’s a quite interesting read. A few questions from it:

1 - there was only one woman on the main board - who was she?

2 - how many locomotives did BRB own at the end of 1983 (ie excluding DMUs, EMUs, HSTs, APT). Within 10% wins the point

3 - how many route miles were there? Again, within 10% wins

4 - average performance on time or up to 5 minutes late was reported to have improved to 90%. Which region, with 85%, performed worst?

Well there was 10470 in 1987 and I know that because of work I have done on this board for electrification stats. Now Windsor Link was added 1985 but some closed so 1 will have a second guess if I may of 10600. You did ask route miles not stks also

Very good indeed. Actual number quoted is 10,541 so you’re within about an S&C of the answer

I could have sworn southern because of all the commuter trains etc. Anyway, since London Midland had all the Anglo-Scottish and other that often ran late lets go for London Midland for question 4.
